Don't get me wrong, I love a good Robyn show, I love me a good Britney Spears set and I am a major fan every time Vampire Weekend, Miike Snow or Friendly Fires come to town. But the one gigantic, brilliant, on-point show that I will never miss is a Janet show.

To prove my point to the fullest, check out this newly posted clip below of Janet in Hong Kong performing "Doesn't Really Matter" from one of the first stops on her "Number Ones: Up Close & Personal" world tour.

Side note: Janet is 44 years old people ... frikin' brilliant!

Commercially, I'd say the janet. album was her peak, as it's her biggest selling CD to date, and that her critical peak came with The Velvet Rope, an album that critics called her "masterpiece" and a great deal of fans call their favorite. She's had several commercial peaks tough. RN was a juggernaut in every aspect of the word, and set so many incredible records. And All For You gave Janet her highest first-week sales ever, so her peaks have definately been varied.

I can appreciate the aim/concept of The Velvet Rope, and while there are some strong songs on it like "I Get Lonely," "You," "Empty," "What About," there's also garbage there like "Go Deep" and that horrid cover of "Tonight's the Night." I can't too much tolerate the cheese of "Together Again" or the tite track either. I can listen to Rhythm Nation from start to finish and not skip over a single track. That album is straight up and down brilliance. I can't do that with The Velvet Rope. The good is great, but the bad is awful. I also think it's one of her worse vocally. She sounded decent enough on Control/Rhythm Nation/janet., it was on TVR that I began to notice her vocals sounding either too thin, too slurred/shrilly, too hushed/mumbly or too choppy/talk-y. I agree that RN is brilliance from top to bottom, after all, it was the best selling album of 1990 for a reason. As for TVR, I don't think her cover of "Tonight's the Night" was bad at all. And it's certainly a cohesive and brilliant album, probably her last most cohesive record from start to finish. And, I have to beg to differ about her recent dance tracks. While some of them may not measure up to her classics, I would definately say that "All Nite (Don't Stop)", "All For You" and "Rock With U" are the "Miss You Much", "If" and "Pleasure Principle" for the new millenium.

i guess to each his own indeed. while i agree that the Tonight's the Night cover was bad, i think it was more of an artistic curveball (that shouldn't have made the album) and an attempt to intentionally further endear gay fans to her (or maybe she WAS experimenting at the time... but i digress, the song shouldn't have made the album). but i disagree that the title track and together again are cheesy. the former to me is dark, bold and edgy with great lyrics, the violin break was very risky. easily her best album opener to me. TA is a layered, bittersweet homage to loss that was universally loved (i know that doesn't mean YOU have to like it, but i don't think i've ever heard it called "cheesy") and Go Deep was a hit for reason. Its probably the most "formulaic" (and easy to select as a single) track on the album but its far from "garbage." So to me, the only "legitimate" misstep on TVR is Tonight's the Night. As much as I love RN, i don't even have it on CD. TVR gets the most spins of all her stuff.

Exactly. The title track to TVR is haunting, poignant and dark, and was so different for Janet at the time. It really is her best opener of all her CDs.
