TV cover okayed for trial of Michael Jackson doctor

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Television cameras will be allowed to film the involuntary manslaughter trial ofMichael Jackson's doctor next month as long as they do not interfere with proceedings, a judge said on Monday.

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Michael Pastor also moved forward the date of Dr. Conrad Murray's trial by four days to March 24, when jury selection will begin. The trial is expected to last about six weeks, lawyers for both sides say.

Murray has pleaded not guilty, and is free on bail. He faces up to fours in prison if convicted. Involuntary manslaughter is defined as unintentional killing without malice, and is a lesser charge than murder.

Pastor said he wanted the "absolute least intrusive placement" of a TV camera in the courtroom and he sought detailed proposals from local news crews. He also blocked cameras from broadcasting jury selection.

Murray, who was with Jackson at his home on the morning he died, June 25, 2009, has admitted giving the 50-year-old singer the powerful anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid while he was rehearsing for a series of planned comeback concerts in London. Coroners ruled his death was caused by an overdose of propofol and a cocktail of sedatives.

Janet Jackson says brothers verbally abused her

Reuters - February 8, 2011 12:06 AM PST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop singer Janet Jackson says her big brother Michael Jackson used to tease her as a youngster about her bottom, while their other siblings called her a "horse," "pig" and "cow."

In an interview with NBC correspondent Meredith Vieira, on the promotional trail for her memoir, Jackson said the verbal abuse made her insecure about her looks.

"I would literally bang my head up against the wall because I didn't feel attractive," she said. "There was a lot of pain in my life. But I did. I felt very unattractive."

She used to laugh at the barnyard taunts, and said Michael's comments about her bottom were probably affectionate. But rather than confront him about his hurtful words, she simply internalized the pain.

Jackson, 44, relates her childhood trauma in her book "True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself," which will be published on February 15.

As with her siblings, Jackson was beaten by her father who forced her to call him by his first name, Joseph. Still she escaped relatively lightly, recalling that she was struck with a belt just once.

"I know my father loves me," she said. "He just has a very, very different way of showing it."

Michael Jackson, almost eight years older than Janet, once tearfully recalled that his father would "tear you up" with a belt or some other convenient cord, and "would throw you up against the wall."

Of her brother, whom she last saw about six weeks before he died in 2009, Jackson said she embarked on the grieving process long after everyone else in the family.

"I don't know if it was trying to shield the pain, or just trying to hold it all together because I saw that everyone else around me was falling apart. And, never -- never taking that moment to really grieve. Really grieve, even at the service (In July 2009).

But she recently allowed herself to watch his videos and listen to his music during a nightlong session in Paris.

"And, there was moments when I-- I felt the cry, and moments that made me laugh. And, it was good for me. I needed it," she said.

Jackson's NBC interview will air on Friday and next Monday on "Today," and Sunday Feb 13 on "Dateline."

These articles have an interesting and strange way to term certain words. I don't think Janet referred to what her brothers said as "verbal abuse" When I think of verbal abuse, I think of harsh profanity and screaming. Yes, they poked fun at her by calling her "dunk" and it hurt her self-image, but I wouldn't say it was outright verbal abuse. You have to check the Joe Jackson file for what that stands for.

Alright, as it seems that the estate IS in fact checking out the forums and trying to get feedback from fans AND after seeing what other fans have said what they'd like to see released, I'd just want to give my opinion on what would NOT be released lol

1. A Bad Tour Boxset of several shows- For one, Michael never changed the setlist during the 1988-89 legs. Even releasing a 2DVD set of one show from the 1987 leg and one show of the 1988-89 leg would be unlikely in my opinion as both shows shared songs

Rock With You

Workin' Day And Night

She's Out Of My Life

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'

Thriller

Beat It

Billie Jean

Human Nature

I Just Can't Stop Loving You

Bad

I Want You Back

The Love You Save

I'll Be There

were all part of both legs. It would be better to release a full show from te '88 leg then include the '87 exclusive songs as bonuses

2. Captain EO- This is the issue of copyright, ownership, and all that stuff. Michael, Disney, Lucasfilms, and Francis Ford Coppola all own a piece of the 18 minute film and it could be VERY difficult to release it on DVD.....plus, it's barely 20 minutes. It would do better on an IMPROVED edition of Vision (which I have a feeling we'll see in some shape or form)

3. Another concert from the Dangerous Tour- They've already released the Bucharest show, and allthough it's HEAVILY edited and dubbed, it's probably all we're gonna get from that on DVD. Now, if they released shows online, that would work

http://www.cnn.com/2011/S...ad.murray/

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Jury selection in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, accused in the death of pop star Michael Jackson, will begin March 24, a judge ordered Monday.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor also approved television cameras in court for the trial.

Pastor had set the trial to start March 28 when Murray invoked his right to a speedy trial during his arraignment last month. But the judge later decided it was cutting too close to the 60-day limit.

"Absolutely, we simply can't start on the last day," Pastor said.

The opening statements are likely to be delivered during the first week of April. The trial is expected to last about six weeks, according to the defense and prosecution.

Murray, who remains free on $75,000 bail, was not in court for Monday's hearing. His lawyers said he was busy earning a living with his medical practice in Las Vegas and Houston.

Pastor blocked the doctor from using his California medical license until the trial is completed. The state medical board requested that be made a provision of his bail.

Murray entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment last month.

"Your honor, I am an innocent man," Murray said.

He was Jackson's personal doctor when the pop star died June 25, 2009, from what a coroner ruled was "acute propofol intoxication," in combination with "the contributory affects of the benzodiazepines."

Regarding the Dangerous Tour, wasn't there a copy of the Argentina show? Parts were leaked sometime in Summer 2009 and it was in high quality definition and sound. Apparently there was a whole story about that copy, but couldn't be released. I would love that copy over Bucharest any day!

MOL

MJ was weak so Murray's right. I mean...that's what Oxman, Rowe, Joe and Randy say, so we should all believe he was indeed weak. It's not like they invented it in order to shift the blame to AEG to get a payday from it.

-They need to releases and remaster all of the Jacksons albums. They can start with The Jacksons Live 30 Year Anniversary with the album and a DVD with it. -Also, their debut is 35 years old this year, that's another one. -With Mike solo, Invincible is 10 years old, so a deluxe edition is due. Maybe it's in the works, Rodney J and Freeze say some tracks from the session will be on a release this year. -Dangerous is 20 Years old, so the same thing as above. -And if Motown is listening, Goin Back To Indiana is 40 years old, maybe the concert can be released also.

Unholyalliance

Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions. I decided what book to buy and I'll get it this Friday. Though, I do agree w/bboy that there aren't a lot of books that deal with his music. So, I went on Google Scholar and I found this:

http://screen.oxfordjourn...l.pdf html

It's a paper that was published for Thriller in the Oxford Journal. It's an interesting look considering that this was published before the allegations of 1993 came out otherwise it would have probably had an entirely different perspective. That being said I have a question:

I've run into a couple of comments concerning the use of chords in some of his penned works and that they aren't always on the scale or that they sometimes there's a conflict between chords. Example, like this one for Beat It:

Musically, the alternation between E minor and D in the harmony expresses what thelyrics leave up to our imagination. Alternating a minor ‘i’ chord with a major chord built on theseventh degree of the scale is an inherently unstable progression. It feels that Jackson is tryingrepeatedly to resolve the minor ‘i’ to the major ‘VII’. The ‘VII’ chord here is the fifth of therelative major (G major), so the harmonic movement does compel the music toward closure;however, a strong cadence is evade by the constant return to the E minor chord. Jackson isworking through the emotions traditionally associated with the minor tonality—sadness, pathos, negativity—and trying to turn them into positive emotions normally associated with the root or“the one.” He is pulling two seemingly oppositional elements together, changing both of them inthe process.

Do instances like this happen often? If so then which songs do they occur in? Someone mentioned that something similar happened in 'Childhood' as well (thought I don't remember the exact quote.) If they do, then what do you think that the purpose/intent is? Do you think that this was done on purpose and does it really reveal a lack of knowledge of music theory on his part or does it reveal that he knew way more than people give him credit for? I guess I'm asking, because I hear that things like that are kind of uncommon for pop music or such.

I hope that I didn't word the question weirdly, but I was curious. I hope that this question makes sense.

^^^ All I can comment on that is that "Beat It" works surprisingly well when played as a ballad, although the melody has to be altered somewhat. The chord progression on "Beat It" is quite simple, but there's something about it that makes it very attractive to play on the keys / guitar. The alternation between those chords is far from ground-breaking, yet it does have a unique feel.
