tom petty and the heartbreakers

man how did i miss these guys for so long

i had obviously heard some of their stuff-but watched the brilliant runnin' down a drean documentary and show-and man am i now hooked big time

got the greatest hits-then

went out and got the first 7 albums

man Tom comes over as such a great guy-they all seem like a real nice bunch of guys-Tom especially seems the ultimate musicians musician

if only P could've done a decent tribute on his 30th anniversary-but since he don't look back......shame cuz this is easily oner of the best music documentarys i've ever seen

tomorrow-im getting the album with honey pie on it-man that track rocks

mabey its an age thing but i think i prefer Tom to Prince thesedays

or they're at least equal

and if saving grace is anything to go by-Toms latest album is better than 2010 by a mile

Tom has been pretty consistent throughout his career but I give Prince the edge due to variety/versatility. What Tom does he does very well but he kind of just has the one sound ('60s garage rock/classic rock). I'm also not convinced that he's ever made a classic album. Some of his albums are very good (Damn The Torpedos, Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers) but they always strike me as a collection of random songs rather than a cohesive album (with the possible exception of The Last DJ). This is a very slight criticism as I have most of his albums and enjoy them, I definitely count myself as a fan, but for me his albums seem to lack something.

I agree that the documentary is excellent but I was a little surprised that they completely skipped over the She's The One album. I know it's "only" a soundtrack but I quite like that album and I was waiting to hear more about it but they skipped right ahead to Echo. I also agree that it would be great to see something similar done for Prince but I don't think it will ever happen. It's a shame because a well done documentary could gain him a lot of fans. I don't think most of the general public fully appreciates his talent and this would be one way to change that.

Anyone have any thoughts on the new album, Mojo? I'm sure I'll pick it up eventually but for whatever reason I didn't feel any need to buy it.

i hear you about P but personally-its been kind of a revelation to me that there are indeed-some AMAZING muiscians outside P's circle. I know that sounds silly-but you get wrapped up in it all and.....................

the heartbreakers are easily as good if not better than the NPG imo and though i hear you on P's albums and variety-i do think Tom's songwriting is better-his lyrics today are as good as ever-and tough P's can't be as he restricts himself so much-i wish P would fully commit to doing a 'classic' sounding guitar album-or a full blues album

the Revolution will always be my number one band/influence but i'm glad-at my age i've found someone to inspire me again-and if Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers give me half as much inspiration as P has -I'll be a happy man-for a spell at least wink

PS-im off to buy Mojo now-so i'll let you know what i think rialb

I agree with you completely here. I like Lotusflow3r and that may be as close to a rock album as Prince gets but I wish his attempts at rock music were not so clean sounding. I don't know, I think he should try doing a rock album with some different musicians. Prince's bands are always very talented and versatile but I don't think they are necessarily a good fit for rock music.

You may also want to check out the Mudcrutch album from 2008. I haven't heard it so I can't give any opinions but if you like Tom Petty you should dig Mudcrutch. I have heard the Mudcrutch material on the Playback box set (dating from before his first album in 1976) which if you don't have you may want to pick up. It's six discs three of which are mostly drawn from the albums but the other three are b-sides and rarities.

I'm curious about which version of Runnin Down A Dream did you see? Apparently there are two different versions. The first version which is 3 dvd's and 1 cd has a red tinted cover while the second version, which has a green tinted cover, lacks the concert dvd and the cd but features some footage that was not in the other version. I'm wondering what the additional footage is but I'm not a big enough fan to buy both versions.

I was a little wary of a 4hour doc, but it really was marvellous, probably one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. It definitely gave me a perspective and respect for the band

Wildflowers is probably my favourite Petty album, I prefer his more mellow and emotional side I think. The Live Anthology should probably be a must-have for a Petty fan, plenty of the songs sound better live than they did in the studio.

I've always thought that they're basically a singles/live act. Their albums, in my opinion, are not very consistent.

I prefer their late '80s stuff and Tom's solo albums, anyway...

Damn the Torpedoes for the most part, plays like a greatest hits package. There're what, four or five of their timeless hits on there, only Century City I could do without as it's so much weaker than the rest of the album. Unfortunately, he's tended to sound like a pedestrian rocker of the Mellancamp mold throughout most of his career imo. I'm quite content just owning Torpedoes and Wildflowers.

^^^ All I can say is that I loved Damn The Torpedoes when it came out...but in saying that, I also have to say that having seen Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in the early 80s, that nothing beats seeing them in concert live. As, with many bands, live is the way to go... wink

There's a lot of great stuff on Greatest Hits or if you want to dig a bit deeper the 2 disc Anthology: Through the Years. When Warner Brothers eventually releases a hits disc that will be well worth picking up too.

Yeah, I've been through most of his '80s albums and made my own compilations. I like some of Full Moon Fever and Highway Companion too, s'just I usually try to avoid buying Greatest Hits.

You should also try the traveling wilburys if you like tom petty

That was a supergroup of Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynn

Also in 1985 at Farm Aid Petty played with dylan, and then back dylan during his 86 and part of 87 tour. You should check it out.

There is even a dvd of a dylan show in 86 with petty and band backing him...it's good

They are great live, the first time I saw them was when they did an acoustic set at A Bridge School Benefit in 1988. My uncle got me their first LP for X-mas when I was 7 years old. TP is one heck of a songwriter. Here are the shows I have been to.

Mojo is ace. I'm really diggin' it-real blues-some nice guitar licks as ever and the superb 'don't pull me over'-with a super trippy video done by Toms daughter

its has a real swampy feel -i really like the production-simple and clean, no gimmicks, just decent players playing

Man I'm a massive fan of this guy at the moment

getting the live anthology next

cool

Cool, I'm sure I'll get Mojo eventually. I'm missing several of his middle period albums (Southern Accents, Pack Up the Pantation, Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open plus Live at the Olympic) but otherwise I've pretty much got everything. I'm kind of hoping that Pack Up the Plantation will be released with the excised tracks restored and maybe some bonus stuff but I don't think Tom likes that album very much so it may not be getting reissued.

I assume you'll be getting the cheap version of Live Anthology? I was mighty tempted to shell out for the deluxe version but it was just a little too expensive and I'm thinking that the dvd's will eventually get a separate release.

Try to get to see them in concert. Great show, and usually throw a garage rock classic in there. He also has a show on Sirius/XM

So how is the burgeoning Tom Petty obsession coming along? Did you score a copy of that deluxe Live Anthology set?

I just filled in a couple of blanks in my collection (Southern Accents and Into the Great Wide Open). I'm still a few albums away from having everything but I'm getting there.
