Prince/Todd Rundgren discussion

Here is a thread discussing Todd and Prince from the viewpoint of Todd's fans.

The Org is mentioned in a positive way.

I had to register... it seems as if the topic started because Prince supposedly did a show where he covered "Love is the Answer" (from this board actually) but it was later proven to be an April's Fools hoax though. But overall, yeah many of them seem to respect Prince a bit, some Todd fans even calling Prince more of a guitar virtuoso than Todd though they still preferred Todd's lol

And Prince nicked the cloud guitar design from him.

Wasn't Todd rude to Prince or something when the Purple one snuck backstage to meet him when he was about 17?

Wow, I'm sorry. I didn't know you had to register to view it.

I read where Prince introduced to him and Bebe Buell (when they were a couple and he played stepfather to Liv Tyler - probably still does) and Todd's only response to him was "oh hi kid". lol

Here are a few posts. I'll try to be fair and post good and uh, well, less good stuff to be fair.

IMO Prince had a very heavy Todd influence from some of his earliest work.
His guitar licks, use of keyboards, and experimental fushion of musical forms show a tip of the hat to Todd. "1999" is his "Todd" album.

I remember reading a review for his "Around The World In A Daze" album in which the tune " Condition Of The Heart" was called " beautifully Rundgrenesque". <img src=" />

I once asked Todd if he and Prince spoke when they were on the same SNL
and he told me that they didn't......I found that odd

"Around the world in a day" (was it "daze"?) is a great album and it always reminded me of Todd, content and all. Let's Go Crazy--YES! Fantastic song!! <img src=" /><img src=" />

Well, that whole "change my name to some funky French dingbat like the artist formerly known as TRI" is ALL about Prince, to be sure... Whether it was a 'dig' at him, I don't know. Prince had some major understandable beef with his record company that I'm sure Todd could totally relate to.. <img src=" />

Prince has always been very open about his influences, Joni Mitchell and Sly Stone especially. He was clearly influenced by TR and his silence about it probably suggests a snub by Todd back in the days he used to be so well know for being a bit snotty! <img src=" />

Pop culture is it's own worst enemy.

Prince churns out the same old suggestive lyrics that teens can giggle over. His style is just about a groove that will sell records. His theatrics are lost in some adolescent fantasy. His works often seem stuck in teen mode. He has the talent, but instant success slowed down his creative juices because money does that.
He is very overrated, and I can list 100 better guitarists probably from memory.

Many of his albums were panned.

Here's a relatively unbiased review:

I would never ass-u-me anything about TR...
or his thoughts or influences and inspirations.......

But you can watch a flick where Poppy from Italy wearing the Prince shirt asks TR backstage about Prince and if he's seen him and what he thinks of him. Scroll to the bottom of our UK party highlights in 2004 to see a short flick my pal Mo made of this meeting.

This subject, brings to mind Todd's lyrics from a fairly recent tune...that say....
"I don't dwell......................."

It is, or it isn't.....or it don' make no diff...
If it sounds good...then groove to it. <img src=" />
