Backstreet Boys' A.J. McLean Back In Rehab

Singer tweeted about getting sober days ago.

Just as Backstreet Boys fever is back in full force as the guys gear up to hit the road with New Kids on the Block this summer comes news that BSB's A.J. McLean has returned to rehab.

TMZ reports that sources close to the pop star say he has been "out of control" as of late due to issues with substance abuse. Reportedly, he was under the influence during much of the Backstreet Boys cruise last month. He allegedly entered rehab, his third time in a decade, because his issues were affecting the planning stages of the NKOTBSB tour, set to begin this June.

A rep for the singer had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time.

However the singer did leave some messages for his fans on Twitter that alluded to a possible upcoming stint in rehab. "Thank u all for my bday wishes and tweets:)! Its gonna be a great year! I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm! Ttfn!" he wrote January 9. One day later, he added, "Hey all wish me luck! This is gonna be an amazing year for me and all around me! I love u all and appreciate all the love and support"

McLean previously entered rehab in July 2001, just as the Backstreet Boys planned to kick off their Black & Blue world tour. He also went to rehab the following year in 2002.

"[A.J.] came to us yesterday and said, 'Guys, I need help,' " group member Brian Littrell told MTV News in 2001. "I looked at him in the eyes and said, 'I'm proud of you.' That's the first time he said it to any of us: 'Guys, I have a problem, and I wanna better myself and better the group and better our situation.' "

sigh

this man has wasted his career (his amazing voice is too good for BSB, they don't deserve him) and now he's wasting his life...

AJ is in my list of "Top10: Unluckiest & Most Tragic Artists Ever"...

hope he recovers once and for all...

Its not really a tragedy. tragedy would be he was found dead in a ditch and no one was even looking for him, that is tragedy. This is something totally different, it isnt a tough thing to kick, some can and then some cant, i mean look at Robin Williams, he had the alcohol under control and then boom in his 50's he was back in a rehab getting sober again. But heres the deal, you do not recover, once you are one you always will be, its just a matter of controlling it or it controlling U.

I just wouldnt label it a tragedy, tragedy sounds to me like hes dead and buried. Tragedies are final, i dont think he is going to end up like that, i feel there is some intervention from others, but its really up to him, the person, and its just not easy, its an addiction, think how many of us drink coffee/caffeine, same difference if you only knew what that stuff does to your insides, trust me, you'd be better off with a drink.

My uncle was a huge alcoholic. It's a disgusting, sad state of affairs. I don't know what else you would label it. Lets just say AJ is a hot mess and I'm praying for his recovery. This has been going on since I was in elementary school.

I remember that time during the Black and Blue tour. I had tix to go see the BSB's when the show scheduled got put off for a later date due to AJ's drinking and rehab. I kept my tix for the re-scheduled show.

Alcoholism/Cocaine addiction

The best singer of the late '90s and early '00s, but ignored because he's just the third most famous component of a dance/teen/"disposable" pop band, so critics and "serious" music followers don't care about him...

pretty tragic...

This is so funny, I was remembering him this morning because of memories with my friend and her brother being BSB fans in additition to MJ fans and how she would call him an AJ wannabe all the time cause he was his favourite, and now I came online to read this. I wish him the best and think he's being really brave about it, admitting he has an issue and getting help. He's anything but sad for that, he's brave. Keeping it in overtime and sacrificing his needs over touring would have made it worse....I would have thought some of you would have at least learned a lesson from MJ by now. If he got help for his insomnia and put himself first (doesn't matter if you think he's an addict or not) instead of going along with the tour, he would still be here with us today, then there would be no Dr. Murray :*( though he's an idiot anyways.
