Not trying to open a new can of worms or anything, but there's one woman whose luck isn't like Janelle's, but she has been putting out great music throughout the 2000's (including her newest project, The Ballad of Purple St. James, which is fantastic but went unnoticed by many) and I love her just as much as Janelle:

YAHZARAH music

Thats actually one of my FAVE albums from 2010. That song and Syreeta/Stevie's "Come Back As A Flower" are my fave cuts from the album music

I wish she included this in the new album though...

Janelle is building a massive international following .... There's really not much "creative" stuff coming from the US so we jump on "Janelle" ...lol

Overrated...I wonder if that's a generational thing. I wonder if that was a term used prior to the 80's in regards to musicians. It seems that its just a by product of the way that music is publicized. You never hear classical musicians called that. If I listen to an album and hear greatness and you hear just ok does that mean the music is overrated. JM music is experimental but easily accesible to most. It's a great album...I hope she stays true to whatever her muse is. wink

In terms of classics....Tight Rope would be a modern day classic...Locked Inside is also a standout. I just like the fact that I can listen to it with my kids and not have to worry about what's comin out next.

What is up with changing the pitch and speed of the Isley brothers track at the beginning?

I know why........just seems like they were trying 2 disguise the fact that they are using a sample.

Sorry I know this is a Janelle thread, but couldn't resist this funky tune from YahZarah's new album, The Ballad of Purple St. James. Pick it up along with Janelle's stuff if you haven't! music

I don't get her and I fail to see that she is THAT talented. Different, yes, but not different in an Erykah Badu or Amy Winehouse way.

No, she isn't Erykah Badu. Janelle actually sings on pitch.

And you did not just compare her to Amy Winehouse.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Baduizm changed the game right out of the gate. The Archandroid shows that she has talent but her material does not have mass appeal to it. She's missing that "it" track. A lot of her work is avant-gaarde. Its not bad but not necessarily something that speaks to the masses, either.

nod

Nor does it compell one to listen to it repeatedly. I bought the album and quickly removed half of the album off of my heavy rotation ipod playlist. Now i'm down to about four songs. If she had released a ten song album, I would probably have much more interest and respect for her as an artist right now.

Most people would have had a session guitarist play the new line as an "interpolation".

True but they just added flex time/varispeed 2 the original sample. L A Z Y.

I have to agree. I have heard samples flipped well before but that didn't even sound good/right.
