Identity

Her best work can be found on the Blackout album. Sales, smsales: "Hold It Against Me" is awful and nothing could make me like it, except seeing her perform it live (preferably in the nude).

I'm not feeling the song too much. However, if Britney fans are still out there, this song will be a hit whether I like, you like, or not. And, hit doesn't necessarily mean a #1 hit, but I would not be surprised because, after all, it's Britney and her fans are passionate.

BRITNEY SPEARS' CAREER SALES

Hi Gary,

I've been trying to find up-to-date sales figures for Britney Spears' albums and digital and physical singles and you're the only source I could find that might be able to help.

Could you please provide those totals?

Thanks!

Hi Daniel,

Billboard.com has been Spears Central this week, following the scorching radio debut of "Hold It Against Me." As previously reported, the song is expected to exceed 400,000 in first-week download sales, as well, according to industry sources, and blast in atop next week's Billboard Hot 100.

In the meantime, here is a look at Spears' U.S. album sales to-date, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

Sales, Title, Release Year
10,555,000, "...Baby One More Time," 1999
9,199,000, "Oops!...I Did It Again," 2000
4,342,000, "Britney," 2001
2,991,000, "In the Zone," 2003
1,667,000, "Circus," 2008
991,000, "Blackout," 2007
172,000, "The Singles Collection, 2009
140,000, "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative," 2004
105,000, "B in the Mix: the Remixes," 2005

With 31.6 million albums sold, Spears ranks as the 16th-best-selling album artist since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

In that span, Spears places fourth among women, trailing only Mariah Carey (53.2 million), Celine Dion (51.1 million) and Shania Twain (34 million).

Spears has sold 2.9 physical singles and 21 million digital tracks.

EDIT: Billboard screwed up the numbers for My Prerogative. That shit did over 1 million.

[Edited 1/14/11 11:10am]

eek Wow, from debut album to last release it's almost a 9 million album difference...now that's a drop right there.

Not really, to be able to maintain that kind of "sales" over 10 plus years is almost unheard of, while putting out quite a few albums during that time and having numerous issues and new little pop wannabes pop up. I mean Prince went from selling 15million in 1984 to selling 500,000 in 1988, so we know that "honeymoon sales" periods are very fleeting, ask Hootie and the blowfish

I can't let you get away with that statement, it's true in most part, but Britney is with a Major Record Label and they have always pushed heavy sales and marketing strategy, TV, Radio etc...... so that's not really the deal here... her "career" is nearly over ....she had a good ride and lots of luck .... she had the so called "career" comeback as all US pop wannabes are allowed....

I wouldn't say that's a good comparison at all considering that Prince wanted to try something totally different when he went from the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack to 'Around The World In a Day'...it's a known fact that's been mentioned in several biographies about him. His decrease in sales makes more sense than hers does because she's had huge backing from her label and millions of dollars pumped into her image and albums from day 1. Plus, Prince has always been seen as a real musician and Britney hasn't. If her albums have stopped selling as much but her songs are still coming up high on singles charts, it's not her music that's the problem...it's the imagery behind the musicl which means it's her. Her album sales plummeted because she grew up and embraced her sexual side without taking into consideration that a large amount of her fanbase were under the age of 15 which meant that their parents had a large sayso in what their kids were listening to and watching. It hurt her and the numbers speak for themselves whether her fans want to accept it or not. There have been quite a few artists who have not had plummeting numbers like this after being in the business for more than 10 years...Sade's recent album sold very well without as much press and hype as Britney's ...just saying.

She's not going anywhere. Even if she stops making music tomorrow, she still has a very successful perfume line and clothing line at Kohl's. She's established so unfortunately, we're stuck with her. She'll always be able to sell her hits even if she never makes another album...Prince has proved this with his recent tour that new material doesn't pack the seats like hits do (unfortunately)

Not comparing her to Prince at all. It's a fact that Prince's current tour is mostly the hit. I've seen it twice and it's been sold out every show thus far. She has enough number one hit singles to be able to do a Vegas show and continue to make a profit off of just her name and hit singles alone....just like Prince, Stevie, Celine, Mariah, Madonna, and anyother established artist has been able to do over the years. Artists nowadays have learned that you have to be a brand to make it because the music industry is slowly dying. Jay-Z, Diddy, and J.Lo were smart to start in the beginnings of their careers. Justin Timberlake can obviously stop making music (which he's opted to do) and he's still making millions off of his clothing line, restaurant, endorsments, and acting.

I can't even compare her musically and image-wise to Madonna, because Madonna had waay more control over her music and image than Britney ever did. Britney is just Britney. She's a poor copy of every popular female pop artist since the 80s. You can watch and hear elements of Madonna and Janet in everything she's ever done which is why I don't see why she's such a big deal. I'd rather the originals than some poor copy but that's just me.

you have jumped the shark/nuked the fridge once again, mate. "Nuff said"?? let's say, instead, that you've finally shown your true colors: you don't what the hell you're talkin' 'bout. The Milli Vanilli affair was a scam, two pretty male models doing all the promotion while a couple of good enough singers sang in the shadows. Britney SINGS the songs the producers give to her, she (more or less, at least since In the Zone) decides the sound/feel of her new albums and (probably) chooses which songs are the best, and she also tours (with a rather thin voice). You despise Britney but respect Mariah?? You're just a big paradox, mate.

Shut your mouth already if you cannot say something new or coherent wink . We've got your point: you think Britney is the worst thing that ever happened to pop music. I just think she's the american, younger, less interesting, super-mainstream and more popular version of Kylie Minogue.

But really, take a sit & leave this thread. You're annoying already...

Britney is a pretty face doing promotion!lol

Britney uses technology to enhance her dull, weak voice!lol

She has as much artist choice in her songs as she did in the Disney Club!lol

She tours with a backing track and backing singers !lol

Really your wasting your time, losing face and its really annoying supporting Britney just because she from the US of A and by pure luck she's been around the music industry while it declined at a rapid rate....lol

Where is the Paradox in saying Mariah is a better singer than Britney who can't sing? lol

We've got your point: you think Britney is the worst thing that ever happened to pop music.

Correct....Nuff Said!wink

Not really, to be able to maintain that kind of "sales" over 10 plus years is almost unheard of, while putting out quite a few albums during that time and having numerous issues and new little pop wannabes pop up. I mean Prince went from selling 15million in 1984 to selling 500,000 in 1988, so we know that "honeymoon sales" periods are very fleeting, ask Hootie and the blowfish

I can't let you get away with that statement, it's true in most part, but Britney is with a Major Record Label and they have always pushed heavy sales and marketing strategy, TV, Radio etc...... so that's not really the deal here... her "career" is nearly over ....she had a good ride and lots of luck .... she had the so called "career" comeback as all US pop wannabes are allowed....

lol

It's called illegal downloading rolleyes Nobody sells like they did in the 90s anymore, and it's silly to even include Blackout when she was being taken to the mental hospital when in any other year she would've been promoting it like crazy.

It baffles me that haters are STILL trying to make out like her career is done and on its last legs. Y'all said it in 1999 when you thought she'd be a one hit wonder and people would eventually tire of that lip syncing. Y'all said it again when she got sexy and you thought all her fans would abandon her. Y'all piped up yet again when JT dumped her and she had a quickie wedding because you thought she'd nothing but a tabloid fixture from then on. Y'all got on your soapbox AGAIN when she married and had kids with K-Fat because lol a mother can't be sexy/have a career/do anything, she's so done. Yep, you all shit talked her when she divorced him and partied because she wasn't ~focused~ enough on that (supposedly over by now) career you all failed to acknowledge until she didn't give a shit about it, either. None of you offered any sympathy to her mental wellbeing when she shaved her head and basically spent a year going crazy, even on stage...no you were too busy calling her fat and "over/done/irrelevant". When she came back mere months after being committed, y'all once again predicted an inevitable flop that never occured as she successfully completely a world tour that raked in millions. And now, here she is, 2011, #1 in 20 countries, after making 64 million in a year where she did absolutely fuck all, 13 years on from alllllll that shit that would've (and has) destroyed lesser stars. Even MJ (who is in no way a lesser star, obvs) took 4 years to even begin to scrape together a comeback from being accused of something he didn't even do. Britney did everything she was accused, went crazy, questionable parental decisions, bad marriages, no panties, drunk, etc etc Did that stop her? NOPE. Neither will your meaningless posts on an internet forum. For the love of God(ney): Shut the fuck up.
