Run DMC, Public Enemy & N.W.A

The 3 greatest and important rap groups ever IMO, And two of the most important band's in history They changed the game with

Run Dmc's Self Titled & Raising Hell

then there was the trilogy of Yo! Bum Rush The Show, It Will Take A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back & Fear Of A Black Planet.

These 2 group's i can listen to these album's over and over, Run DMC Had a fun charm to them, and they incorporated so many musical elements to there song's

Public Enemy was the political granddaddy of hip hop, and they stood for something.

Also i am now adding N.W.A, Cause people have mentioned them and i agree there deserve the spot here to=]

So fan's of the band come fourth and let's talk wink

To be honest with you (and I kinda hate to admit this, I feel like I missed out on something) I never really paid Run DMC any mind in those early days. Dont get me wrong...I knew who they were and I dug "Its Like That" and "Rockbox", but I resisted hip hop. I was a youngster, 8, 9 years old, and I could see that soul/R&B/funk was dying and I didnt like it one bit. This was after "1999" and before "Purple Rain"...everyone I knew dug Prince and the Time, Slave and Zapp, the Pfunk shit...suddenly they started putting my heroes on the backburner. 83, 84, 85...all anyone wanted to do was rap and listen to rap...Kurtis Blow, Fat Boys, Run DMC, UTFO, LL. While I did dig it, I waved the Prince flag STRONG and resisted on principle. Again...I dug the stuff, but I was angry and didnt like it. Does that make sense?

Oddly the first concert I ever went to was June 87, San Diego Sports Arena, Raising Hell Tour, the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. I honestly went to see the Beastie Boys and they put on a dope show, but Run DMC tore the fuckin house down! I mean DAMN! There was a Tower Records across the street from the Sports Arena and I bought the Raising Hell wax that night.

I was still a little resistant to hip hop overall, but on Christmas night 87, my cousin played me a song called "M.P.E". It was the dopest shit I ever heard! "Public-Public-Public Enemy...Public-Public-Public Enemy..." Oh my God. I didnt buy the "Yo Bum Rush The Show" album, but when "It Takes A Nation..." dropped, it was all over. "Fear of a Black Planet"...Holy Shit! "Apocalypse 91" killed them (with politicians pissed about "Arizona" and gangstas pissed about "Yo Ni**a" "Night Train", etc) but that shit was the bomb to me and was still better than 98% of what was out at the time and what has come since. Public Enemy and NWA (along with the other West Coast pioneers...Quik and his crew, Eiht, Too Short) are the only rap acts to this day that I would consider myself a fan of...but PE reigns supreme.

I got a letter from the government the other day...I opened and read it, it said they were suckas...

I am a fan of Run DMC. The first arena show I went to was Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, Whodini, and LL Cool J in Aug 1986. I still have the tourbook.

Interesting story smile

It was these group's that got me into hip-hop. I used to pay no mind to it, then i got Fear Of A Black Planet & Raising hell on a whim and the rest is history.

N.W.A Is another story ahhhhhhhh biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

Good memories, I bought Straight Outta Compton the same day i bought Violator from Depeche Mode, not knowing either of these band's work i became equally fascinated by both group's after that day biggrin good time's

Grandmaster Flash, The Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow.

I love all early rap right up to RUN DMC and P.E pre-90's., i don't know what happened. N.W.A and 2 live crew was where i got disinterested. no need for the direction it took. Rap was doing fine. It's sure fucking shit now.

The ''gangsterness?''

I found them to be telling stories of the street, like Guns N Roses told stories of L.A on Appetite For Destruction. And there was light moments like Express yourself and on Appetite it was Sweet Child o mine

They are frauds, and musically they are weak to me.

Eazy is a terrible rapper.

Lets not forget that they popularized the gangsta rap phase that NEVER died out.

Run DMC and Public Enemy are far superior to NWA in every aspect.

you gotta realize that, for the old-school/golden age fans, 90s rap was as appetizing as 90s alternative-rock was for the late-80s hair-metal/thrash headbangers. Just...no lol

The Chronic, Ice Cube's first three albums, Mama Said Knock U Out and PE's 90s albums are the only rap records of the 90s that I still dig...

I do respect Nas, though... wink , and I like many 90s rap singles, but not the albums...
