Late 80s Jam of the Day: "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained" by Charlie Singleton
The late 80s were some horrible crossover pop infested times but there still were a few artists that could throwdown hard and funky and this is one of the baddest jams of the era. Give it up for "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained" by Charlie Singleton. Much better than that mellow "Candy" type shit Cameo was doing during that era. Andy is a four letter word.

One of my FAVORITE jams!
Andy, do you have the 12" "Silly Dance Mix" of this? If not, I can upload it. It's the extended version.

Never mind, I didn't click the video before posting. This IS the Silly Dance Mix. Good job! |

Decent track.
I love the sparse, hard hitting snare infested late 80s sound.
I have a new Cinema track that I will post up soon that is the epitome of that style.
+ How is Charlie's third album? I couldn't find a valid link for it.

Are you talking about "Man On A Mission"? If so, it's dope. I'm going to pull it out of the archive now and re-listen. I remember liking it a lot, but it's been a while since I've listened to it. [Edited 1/7/11 10:08am] |

This was a bad ass jam back in the day. Charlie is a highly underrated guitarist as well. He really was a bad ass.

Yeah, I'll have to try finding it when I get home.
+ BlaqueKnight, he still is. Have U seen recent pictures of him? he looks like a tribal funk warrior. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

So I'm re-listening to "Man On A Mission" right now.
Man, I shoulda pulled this one out sooner. This should be getting a LOT more play from me. It's Charlie's best album and here's why.
For me, "Modern Man" and "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained" were great albums, but they were both inconsistent. There was a handful of EXCELLENT jams on both, and then there was some stuff that was only OK-to-good. For example, on "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained", I could have done without the cover of Sly's "Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again".
"Man On A Mission" also has a handful of truly dope jams, but what makes the difference is that the entire album is of a consistently high standard. This album has me making the funk-face the whole way through.

Cool. For me, the killer cuts on this record are the title track, "Splerj", "Good, Bad & Ugly", "Luv'z Kickin" and "I'm Yours". |

Charlie really knows how to carry a song vocally without overpowering the instrumental. Smooth shit throughout.
Love the powerful psuedo-NJS styled percussion.
The first three cuts are quality. It's too bad that the momentum created by those tracks is stifled by the weak "Sorry Charlie". I was expecting a ballad sooner or later but this just didn't work very well (Run in your heart isn't very good either).
I agree with U as far as the best songs go.
A very solid album that lacks a true standout song, but that doesn't necessarily work against it.
Cut some of the weaker joints and this is good for a complete listen.
