Awww, My Dear, Mr. Gaye just popped up on my playlist. Such a shame known one talented enough is popular today to write a song to her. sad

SOSGEMINI - Yeah, you are right about that, we will be waiting and waiting for some new MDMGs. Cross your fingers (i.e. don't hold your breath) that we will soon be able to hear Smokey's "Shine"? He said it was a response song for her, and that he performed it at the private memorial that was held for her.

I doubt there's any R&B (or any genre type of) female artist who DON'T have a gay following. I think it's almost a prerequisite. wink

True that, there have been pictures over the years with Da Brat, Lyte, Queen Latifah ...

But as far as I can observe there has never been significant information available that Tee was "dating" a woman. I believe that she spoke of having had spent time with a woman in a romantic fashion (i.e., sexual), but there was not a lot of elaboration; it was more of an acknowlegement that what Rick had said about the basic fact that she has been with women is true. Personally, I wouldn't be at all suprised if she had had a significant relationship with a woman that was quite heartfelt and true.

Teena was said to have employed a trans-gendered background singer in some of her live shows. Now that is bold and badass, and completely Teena Marie!! (Was that a story I read here on the org?)

["I doubt there's any R&B (or any genre type of) female artist who DON'T have a gay following. I think it's almost a prerequisite."] But you know, she provided a different/greater/deeper kind of solace for us than most Divas - particularly after we left the dance floor. (Just like Joey was a different kind of gay.)

But Teena certainly has always inadvertantly messed with gender politics and the politics of sexuality. Writing, producing, and arranging were done by very few women back in her heyday. Working overtime to get a recording contract the way she did, and then fighting back when the contract was working her overtime, was gender politics at their finest.

Tee referred to this book as "boring." She said that the real stories are far more compelling and exciting than what he put in this book. She talked about how he wrote this book while he was incarcerated, and that he wrote with an incarcerated critical perspective. And I think she was probably right about this. I haven't read the whole book, but have read long passages. What I read did not have anything of depth, or reflect on what it was like to be James Ambrose Johnson ... meeting Stevie Wonder for the first time, producing the Temps, the Streets tour, the phenominal Streets album, and the like. The "Memoirs..." are of Rick James' life, and as such have a preoccupation with drugs, chicks and ego.

I will say that I loved the juice that I read well enough, couldn't turn away to tell you the truth. But I wonder if the manuscript for "Memoirs of a Superman," by James Ambrose Johnson is out there. It would be an amazing read right that.

You right! But this one will be much more amazing based on the concept alone.

Mother’s Day Tribute to Teena Marie at Boardwalk Hall

Slated for Saturday, May 7, starting 7:30pm, the event will serve a tribute to Teena Marie, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer who passed away unexpectedly December 26, 2010. Charlie Wilson, Keith Sweat and THE WHISPERS!

Even if they did, the only songs the Grammy Awards committe would know are I Need Your Lovin' & Lovergirl. Remember, Teena didn't try too hard to have crossover-pop success.

She was right. Not only is it uninteresting, it's riddled with typos, grammatical errors, and misspellings. I tossed my copy a year ago.

I agree, but sadly they wont. I'm thinking the most they'll do is mention her briefly during the "In remembrance" segment part of the show which acknowledges all the musicians who died that year.

But that's it I think sadly. She really deserves so much more. Teena has never gotten her due.
