What's left ?
A shelved album of recordings from the 1975-1979 period entitled YOU GOT THE LOVE which had been planned in 1983. 6 of its 10 tracks were released since then. The tracklisting from YOU GOT THE LOVE is (songs in bold characters are the four songs still in the vaults today) :
"You Got the Love"/"You Got Away"/"Oh Love"/"Wasn't I Good to You"/"Why Can't I Get Next to You"/"Every Little Bit Hurts"/"Don't Turn Your Back on Me"/"Love Just Wouldn't Be Right"/"Hey Boy"/"Co-Pilot to Pilot"

Around this time (1982/83) she was feuding with Motown.Since there was no new album,I guess they were planning to release this instead? A collection of old songs from the vault? hmmm Does anyone have any more info on this project?

Motown was famous for releasing vault tracks or even albums by artists who had "defected from" the label, the "Farewell My Summer Love" album by MJ and the "We Could Never Light That Old Flame Again" single by Diana Ross are just two examples, so the fact that they wanted to release an album of vault material by Teena in 1983 seems pretty legit.

I'm pretty sure we'll see several Teena Marie releases from Motown/Universal before the end of the year, they already have the "Icon" budget release lined up for February and I wouldn't be suprised if the remaining unreleased Motown tracks end up on a compilation or an expanded edition.

The expanded edition of "Wild and Peaceful" was supposed to be the first, with Lady T and Irons in The Fire due after that, but they never happened. I don't know if it's because sales of "Wild..." fell short or if it was just a matter of priorities at UME, but I hope these expanded editions will come some day. Then again, it took UME several years to come up with decent Rick James product after he died... All I know is, they had better get Teena's ad Rick's expanded editions out soon before the music industry turns to DD only. I want proper cd's and booklets!

First post of the new year ... very sad news Teena Marie had a massive underground following in the UK and her songs are being played in tribute to her talent ....

As you know she was due to play the UK in Feb 2011...

Wow. What an awesome vocal & am loving the Prince reference 2!!

Have both greatest hits sets but am now ploughing through her back catalog & have just ordered `La Dona` & `Sapphire`. I was tempted 2 order the whole lot but i wanted 2 wait & fully digest each album. 2 be honest i`d slept on Teena & have only really started LOVING her now that she`s passed!! However what a legacy she has left & now this beautiful, talented & gracious woman will live forever!!

Thanks for the clip Tony. Was she working on new material and was any of it recorded? Or just songs that did not make it on Congo Square?

I don't know for sure. But Teena still had the unreleased Black Rain album. But some of the tracks ended up on the La Dona album.

Teena apparently finished a new album mere days before she died. So we'll definitely get that.

I remember in 2009 when Congo Square was released, she promised that she would re-release her 1994 independently released, Passion Play and the unreleased Black Rain sessions sometime in the near future on her Twitter page, when one of her fans were asking her about it.

I'm sure glad I got Passion Play a few years ago on CD. Look at the price used on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Pas...=1-2-spell

A friend sent me a bootleg of Black Rain a couple years back. I dunno where she got it. I believe it was a 2 CD set. It's in storage somewhere.

Someone sent me a digital CD-quality copy of Passion Play on the internet and I burned it on CD-R. I never really brought a legitimate copy. Anways, my copy sounds so superior. Such a great album.

I think I have all her CD's, except Emerald City, which I have on LP only. I hope it get re-released on CD at a good price. It would be nice to have a concert DVD too.

Yeah it's pretty unfortunate that it didn't get the love it deserved in '94-'95. You can tell she was coming into her own once again with that album.

From benjaminira:

Teena Marie's Sexuality

I've always loved her ballads..."Stop The World", "Sunny Skies" "Tune In Tomorrow"...but today I went over a friends house, who is a big fan too...We we're listening to her song "Honey Call"...the lyrics are a bit ambiguious...the line where she refers to Concubine...girl on girl perhaps? I've always wondered where she stood with sexuality...there have been rumors for many years...was she Bi? A latent Lesbian? Listen to the track "Ivory (a tone poem)"..."your lips, the kind that were made for kissing..."the kiss that I wanted to try out on myself, to see if it was good enough for U"...I can read Lesbian tendencies...or am I reading too much into her lyrics? I KNOW she has a HUGE Lesbian/Gay following...thoughts?

hmmm

hmmm

Old news.

In his autobiography, Rick James already outed Teena's bisexuality. He even confirmed the story in a thread on his former website just a few months before he died.

Teena always came across as a very open minded, spiritual kind of person. I'm not suprised that she was bi at all.
