R. Kelly: New Album, Love Letter

[img:$uid]http://i56.tinypic.com/2h3553m.jpg[/img:$uid]

November 9, 2010

Press release:

Jive Records is pleased to announce the release of the three-time Grammy Award winner's new album, Love Letter.

Destined to become a modern classic, R. Kelly's 11th studio album will be available in stores and at digital retailers on December 14.

Already setting the stage for Love Letter is the hot lead single "When a Woman Loves". The refreshing, retro-soul ballad jumped from No. 8 to No. 3 on the Urban AC chart this week, becoming the third most-increased record at the format. It was written and produced by R. Kelly, as is the title track—and second single—from the singer's forthcoming album.

"Love Letter" impacts Urban AC and Urban Mainstream November 22. A remix to the track will be available as well entitled "Love Letter Christmas."

Steeped in the soul personified by such mentor-heroes as Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye, "When a Woman Loves" set a record when it debuted at No. 24 on the Urban AC chart.

The single marked the highest chart bow by a male artist since Michael Jackson's "This Is It," which debuted at No. 16 last October.

It also signaled R. Kelly's second-best career debut behind "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time" (No. 19) in 1999. The song's Jeremy Rall/R. Kelly directed video,), paying homage to soul music's enduring legacy, is in steady rotation on both MTV Jams and VH1 Soul.

A "No. 1 Most Added" at Urban AC radio upon its release, "When a Woman Loves" has drawn critical acclaim from mainstream media.

Entertainment Weekly declared, "R. Kelly's 'When A Woman Loves' has a classic throwback vibe unlike almost anything in his recent catalog."

That praise is a testament to the multi-platinum artist's intuitive and versatile skills as a songwriter and singer. After 19 years of stardom, R. Kelly continues to wear the crown as the King of R&B.

Everyone says i look like a combination of R. Kelly and Prince...that pic just made a certain person in the room feel the need to remind me lol. Anyway, i will take this album over all that crap he's released for the last few years. The lead single is a big block of cheese mixed with bad production, but it's still a step in the right direction nonetheless.

He's only released 11 studio albums? Seems like it should be WAY more than that. Has he released a bunch of EPs that they aren't counting?

He's had a couple of double albums and a few collab albums with Jay-Z and can't forget his group Public Announcement.

Okay, I just watched the video...

Why does every new video by this guy seem like he's performing a song on a comedy show?

As much as I like retro stuff, this just doesn't cut it. The production doesn't bother me, it just sounds like it started out as a joke and he built the rest on that. Although I'm afraid he is completely serious with the song.

He looks good with those glasses though.

Once again, the youtube comments are priceless:

"My favourite r kelly song. See how all the music these days are targeted at us teenagers for clubs because thats where? you make the most money from, whereas back in the day will slow acapella and smooth r n b or soul it was about the heart and spirit you put into your music. Artists these days cant make music they use too much bass or a robot voice which ruins the voice and song. R kelly needs more like this to bring back the old days where LOVE for music was for real."

"I'm not really into soul music, but this is great!!!"

"[N word snip - luv4u] got skillz"

"what a voice"

"We know R. Kelly loves Nelly Furtado. This is the real love!!"

falloff

I like it. He looks like a cross between Sam Cooke and Ray Charles.

Okay, the word "every" is an exaggeration there.

But c'mon, don't be surprised if someone thinks R.Kelly has become unintentionally funny over the last few years. I like some of his songs though and think "Fortunate" is one of Maxwell's best tracks.

No, I agree with you. It's just I don't agree that most his videos look like he's performing on a comedy show. Btw, he's actually not being 'unintentionally' funny lol He knows some of his music cracks people up -

Some of my music is comical. It’s almost like it’s sexual, but if you really listen to it, it’s really funny man. “Feelin on Yo Booty” was a comedy sexual song. It was comical but yet, within its own genius, you’ll find a real song in there. You gotta be very silly to sing it, and you gotta be a a silly person to love it. I like to make people laugh at what I do—I like to make ‘em have fun. When you go to church, if that pastor at some point don’t make you laugh, he probably ain’t gon’ make you join. You gotta have a joke or two in the there. “We gon’ just talk about Jesus and be really serious up in this piece? ‘Cause I’m ‘bout to leave.” You got to do somethin’ to keep the crowd.

lol lol lol

He looks like Stevie Wonder in this cover from 1963:

I was thinkin' Ray Charles at first, but the resemblance to that Stevie cover is undeniable (wonder if it was intentional?).

I think it's a tribute. He said something about paying homage to his inspirations Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder on the album.
