Yeah that was an odd moment in history. lol

I know his stuff was on the ATV catalog.

Really? Wasn't that the company that had the Beatles' publishing? Does that mean that they sued themselves over the Chuck Berry line that John Lennon "stole" for "Come Together?" Very strange!

Actually, back when the Beatles were active, the group's publishing was Northern Songs. They even have a song on Yellow Submarine called "It's Only A Northern Song". ATV aquired Northern Songs later. But I was never sure if George's & Ringo's songs were a part of that. George's songs were registered as "Harrisongs".

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

But George is the one who wrote and sang "Only A Northern Song". His Beatles era songs could still be under Northern as the co-publisher. It's seems unlikely that George would be with a separate company than John & Paul, since they all had the same manager and they nor Brian Epstein weren't really aware of how publishing worked at the time, which is partly how they lost the songs in the 1st place. I think the John & Paul songs were called "Maclen Music", but it was still under Northern as the co-publisher. But when Ringo started writing his songs on the later albums, Brian Epstein was dead, so I don't know if he was under the same deal.

"Only A Northern Song" is actually about the situation.

Harrison wrote "Only a Northern Song", the title a play on the song's origins, to appear on the Sgt. Pepper album; the lyrics express in part his disappointment with his publishing contract and with the company's handling of his songs. The song was left out of the album, later appearing in the Beatles' animated feature, 1968's Yellow Submarine and its soundtrack.

Chuck is an underrated pioneer that hardly receives the credit he deserves. I wish him a speedy recovery. There are far too many legends falling ill these days.

I just look at all of this as a coincidence really. In the end of the day, their music and lasting images may be immortal but these legends are indeed human.

I have to admit, I have a lot of respect for Chuck Berry. I'm 22 years old and hate to travel. But this man is 84 and still going?? Damn...I hope I'm still goin' like that when I'm 84. My respect for him just got doubled, because I already had a lot of respect for him anyway.

Chuck performs simply because he likes to, not cuz he's broke. He's never stopped performing actually. I think he has a standing gig in St. Louis when he's not traveling.

He's da man and I hope he'll be fine. Chuck's got alot of vim and vigor for his years, so I never count him out. lol

You can't cacth him! wink (My jam)

Yeah I think he was probably exhausted - three performances in two nights will do that.

True. I don't think folks know just how heavy his schedule is even in this era. Frankly he puts lots of decades younger acts to shame (looking at YOU Lauryn Hill), so this might seem more alarming than it actually is. Reminds me of that recent scare w/ Bill Nye The Science Guy about 1-2 months ago. Bill does a heavy lecture schedule so he was just pretty much beat. lol

Lots of these older cats really work hard... some for money ;others just for the love of it. I think Richard and Fats still do gigs and Buddy, Booker T, and BB love the boards. LOL...it's NOT all about money folks.

I'm more worried about Aretha (who's far younger) than Chuck, tbh.

Yeah I'm sure he'll be back onstage with no problem. Same with Richard once he recovers fully from his hip surgery. Aretha's much younger so yeah.

I love all three of them. I am soooooo amazed that Chuck and Richard are still going at their age.

But, with Aretha being younger, her health problems are a whole lot worse than Chuck and Richard combined, probably, so you have to tip your hat to her, as well. I find it kind of funny, and don't call me crazy on this, but I find it kind of ironic that Aretha is the one who sang R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Just throwing that out there. biggrin
