Andy's Teena Marie Mix Since I don't have to go to work today, I finally had a chance to do some drinking and make a Teena Marie mix last night. Here's the link and tell me what you think.....

Just bought I Need Your Lovin' as a result of listening to this continuous Teena Marie play mix. I don't have time to listen to the rest this morning, but I intend to finish later because I may hear yet another track I like. Thanks, Andy.
Just bought Chains and Jammin'. [Edited 12/31/10 4:30am]

Get on up baby...
...some of my very favorites. I love that you have the 12" for Jammin' after all of these years? You brought back all the best memories of her 1984 rip. (Did you have the 12" of Lovergirl where the intro is a synth effect replicating chopper blades? "I see you brought your helicopter to pick me up?" What a bad ass chick.)
You're All The Boogie I Need and Don't Look Back are perfect neighbors. (YATBIN and the Tequilla bottle don't want to say goodbye to each other this morning - started early today on your last night's lead.)
The poignant finish was hard, but I listened to it twice none the less.
Down on my knees / I'm begging you please / come on back / come on back baby / please

Sweet! Thanks for this, Andy. I am going to check it out right away.
Any chance of a tracklist? I'm sure I'll recognise most of the songs when I listen to it but there's a few Teena albums that are missing from my collection and I'm not familiar with, so it would be appreciated. |

OK, here's the tracklist:
(Intro from "The View") I Need Your Lovin' Behind The Groove I'm Just A Sucker For Love (Studio/Live) Square Biz Chains Jammin' (12 Inch) Fix It It Must Be Magic Lovergirl (12 Inch) You're All The Boogie I Need Don't Look Back First Class Love I Can't Love Anymore Andy is a four letter word.

Actually, I never knew that a 12 Inch of "Jammin'" existed until a few days ago. I saw it on youtube and had to have it so I just plugged my laptop into the stereo and recorded the audio onto CD. I'm from the old school honey, if you can't find it, record it.
As for the 12 Inch of "Lovergirl", I have that on a compilation CD I bought in the 1990s. I think it's called "Club Epic" or something like that. I've never heard the version you are talking about with the helicopter intro. I used to have the "Lovergirl" 45 back in 1984 and gave it to a friend when I bought the "Starchild" album. I wish I had kept it though because the 45 version sounds different than the album version.
As for the ending song "I Can't Love Anymore", those few seconds of blank space before it started wasn't done intentionally. I kept listening to several songs through the headphones while "First Class Love" was playing but I couldn't get any of them to blend. Before I knew it, the song was fading down and I had to do something fast so I threw on "I Can't Love Anymore". I had intended to end it with "Deja Vu" but didn't have time to cue it in time. After listening to it, I think "I Can't Love Anymore" ended it pretty good. Andy is a four letter word.

Thanks to all of y'all. After listening to it this morning with sober ears, I hear some good blends and I also hear some screw-ups. It was so much easier back in the old cassette days when you could stop the tape and record over your mistakes. When you're recording onto a CD, you're live and once you put something on there, it's on there forever. Andy is a four letter word.

That's part of the "art" of analog mixing....I like hearing that right along with some genuine hiss-n-pop.
Us "old-schoolers" enjoy those as part of the craft. I don't trust perfect mixers Funk Is It's Own Reward

Amen. In the age of Pro Tools, VDJ, Seratto (although I use em), etc....it's nice to hear the jamz "au naturale". Makes me nostalgic for the house parties of old.
Andy's mixes in particular have that warm "house party" vibe (his BBQ mix & his punk funk mix from earlier this year are also good examples). Funk Is It's Own Reward

You've heard mine correct?

Can't Love ended it exceptionally and intuitively well - perfect, ain't no question. Also appreciated your intro, "I'm just me."
By "hard" I meant hard on my heart to listen to; that whole album was my jam for quite some time after I first got it. I apologize for being unclear. "You have taken the best part of me / Baby / Baby / Can't you see I'm crying / And worse you left me alone and I feel - I think I'm dying / Down on my knees / I'm begging you please / come on back / come on back baby / please."
Like she said once on every album, "maybe that will express what I've been going through." You expressed some stuff, and encouraged the rest of us in the process. (When I was younger I could quote you every song that she included that line in. But now? Like my friend Jim always said "why do you think they call it dope" [pot]).
I gotta find that Lovergirl 12" intro to post for you, as a DJ you will extra appreciate how fine a little moment it is. It was a tribute to her time with Rick and the Streets tour when he would actually pick her up in a helicopter on occasion to get to some arena.
Anyway, thank you for the mix, I appreciate it. Square Biz.

Would that be difficult for the tech illiterate to do? Just some software?

Props to U Andy! I played this last night at a New Years party, and we all danced and cried! It's moments like that, that make U really feel the power of music! Especially when U can cry to a dance song! RIP Lady Tee. And again, Thanks Andy! If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!
