Mongo Santamaria

Anyone into Afro-Cuban music? Mongo Santamaria was one of my parents' favorite artists. Take a listen:

Cool. His music, as well as Johnny Pacheco, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, just to name a few, was so much a part of my early childhood. When I go back to listen to his music, it me of a time when I was 5 years old, and my Uncle Johnny taught me how to do the meringue.

I know, lol I used to listen to that song through his myspace link. Hard to find on youtube, which I don't think is available. I also liked his cover of "Green Onions". I remember my dad listening to a lot of jazz greats as well, like Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
