Lady Tee's legacy... Who can carry on? Rose LeBeau? Don't say Joss Stone. I love her, but I mean somebody who can write, play, and perform like Teena Did? And she don't have to be "White" either. If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

I'd say Nikka Costa carries her torch. However, her biggest legacy will be her fight against Motown. Mainstream media is giving her the proper credit for that evolutionary change within the music industry. It's funny, while most entertainers would have used the opportunity to self-promote, Teena used her legal name as to be the title of the law thus bringing the merits of the suit to forefront versus her celebrity. Kudos! Space for sale...

Now this girl here.....................
Can definitely pick up where Lady T left off, if given a chance.

Hmmmmm...good question. I know this was mentioned in the post that race doesn't matter. As their are alot of soulful sounding white female singers out there. I haven't seen one however that was deeply connected to the soulful experience or African American community the way Teena was. She was funky, she was hood, yet consicous and aware, she was down home, she was soulful, she was a round the way girl, she was connected to the art, she paid homage and studied her craft by the greats before her....she WAS a sista in a white womans body. I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there. I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish. And I am

There are so many nuances to her gifts and legacy, I'm not sure that we will see it in one person. But, I do believe we will know that person in a heartbeat if and when we see them. Could be a dude, you never know, huh?
If we are looking for the basics, an insightful ivory soul singer and composer with integrity, beauty and grace, maybe a glance toward Adelle would be useful. I love her up a storm.

To me, there was only one, Teena. Nobody can really come close to her, with the exception of Anastasia. Other than her, there is nobody that can come close. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

No one. | |

Anastasia is also my top pick.
After her, I pick Taylor Dayne & Kathy Troccoli in that order.

I agree....I am reading the Taylor Daynes and the Anastacias....and they have powerful voices in their own right. They however do not have the swagger and soul Lady T. had. I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.

Nor the songwriting or playing an instrument skill. With that all being said, I stick with Nikka. Space for sale...

I'd have to say I agree. I remember when Nikka's album "Everybody Got Their Something" was released and the reviewer said that Nikka sounds like Teena Marie's younger, angrier Sister! If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Soul, natch.
Funk/Rock, natch.
Torch ballad, natch!
and with Prince at that.
Funny how you discovered her. I bought her first album when a review by Rolling Stone compared her to Wendy and Lisa. Space for sale...

Nobody in these days because funk was a big part of her early legacy and if someone were to make it, it wouldn't get any airplay. If this were the old days when funk still stood a chance, I would say Patrice Rushen. As far as vocally goes, I really could care less. Vocalists without funk behind them are useless. Andy is a four letter word.

As far as the whole package, Lady Tee is like Tina Turner, MJ and Prince - they are irreplacable and truly one of a kind.
Uh, while I'm here, I was wondering: A) How come there was no follow up trial on Gary Coleman's wife? If the situation were reversed Gary would be on TV on trial saying: "What choo' talking about Your Honor?"
And B) If Al Stewart (Year Of The Cat) and Michael Franks remade "The Girl Is Mine" who would get the girl?
Here is my favorite Teena Marie song.

Love this song!
What happened to The "RIP Teena" thread? It seems like it was deleted or something. [Edited 1/2/11 20:47pm] "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

I was just wondering that. It was up earlier today. But unfortunately a certain person came back into the thread today spouting off his Teena/Rick/El DeBarge being disco nonsense. That might have something to do with the thread disappearing. Didn't he get the message when his thread about Teena was locked? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I don't think his hate could have that much power. If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

I'm not old enough to remember this. I saw the Unsung episode and the one paragraph it gets in her tributes: "Marie left Motown in 1982 and her split became historic: She sued the label and the legal battle led to a law preventing record labels from holding an artist without releasing any of their music."
Is there a book that covers the 80s era of Motown? Or one about Teena? I don't recall much talk about the split in Rick James' memoirs, but his book was very personal.

Cornelius (who is really the once banned orger Riverport) is a freaking idiot. He/she was in the Teena Marie RIP thread making homophobic comments.
