I've been a regular reggae listener since 1989, but was aware of it before that (thankfully I grew up in a very musical household). But I'm strictly a roots listener. The more political or spiritual the better. I've tried many times to make the transition to dancehall but it just does nothing for me. All my favorites are old school: Bob (obviously), Culture, Israel Vibration, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Bunny is still keeping the spirit alive, and I definitely dig Gregory Isaacs (even though he also did a lot of "lovers rock"). I actually wish I could find some younger cats that had the same vibe, but I think times have just changed to much for that to happen again.
Gunshalen, I've read the books and seen the docs you're talking about regarding Bob's death. The US government was definitely not Bob's best friend and there is some interesting theories put forth regarding their possible involvement. But in the end, I don't think they had anything to do with it. No, Bob died because he had cancer and refused to get proper medical treatment.

I have never thought anything sinister about Marley's death. But Peter Tosh was murdered. Bob was certainly political, and died soon after Lennon, in the dawning of a new era of Republican leadership. Particularly Lennon, who had been quiet for years, and went to Carter's inauguration, was wire-tapped by Nixon, etc. you can see that he migh thave been seen as an enemy of the Republicans.
Not sure about Bob, but it's young to die from cancer at 36. But it happens. People die even younger, in fact. My Legacy

yeah I think it was just cancer, but Bob would have been a prime candidate for political assassination if anyone was My Legacy

I remember vaguely hearing something about the type of cancer he had was not normally associated with blacks? That he was possibly injected with it...something like that, but I never really paid it any mind.
As for the US govt...yeah, they were watching him. In 1975 he was listed as #5 on the CIA's most watched list, leading Bob to tell them about themselves...
Dont involve Rasta in your say say Rasta dont work for no CIA
They did try to assassinate him in Jamaica, December 1975, but it revolved around the elections in Jamaica. For those who dont know the story...
The two rival parties (led by whites; Michael Manley was one, I dont remember the other) had the black youth in Jamaica basically killing each other in their names. One of the political leaders approached Bob about putting on a concert to promote a peaceful election and Bob agreed. Said politician then made posters/advertisements for the show that depicted Bob as being on their side. The black youth who supported the rival politician then attempted to assassinate Bob a day or so before the concert.
The band was rehearsing and took a break. Bob walked into the kitchen and started peeling a grapefruit. He heard a noise at the door and looked...saw the gunman creeping into the house. Gunman opened fire and Bob turned sideways. The bullet went thru his left arm, grazed his chest, and went in and out of his right arm. Both his manager and wife were shot as well, his manager the worst, but everyone survived. And of course, Bob sang about it...
See them fighting for power but they know not the hour So they be bribin with their guns, spare parts, and money trying to belittle our integrity now They say what we know is just what they tell us and we're so ignorant cause everytime they can reach us Through political strategy they keep us hungry and when you gonna get some food your brother got to be your enemy
That incident led to about two years of living in exile in London.
While in London, removed from all the pressure that went along with being the "King of Jamaica" (Bob ran Trenchtown, folks), he recorded the "Exodus" and "Kaya" albums. "Kaya" is full of love songs, very little political talk on that one, cause Bob said he was tired of fighting.
He came back to the struggle though in 1979 with "Survival".

Kaya is such a strong album; Easy Skanking, Kaya, Is This Love, Satisfy My Soul, Sun Is Shining, She's Gone, Misty Morning, Running Away and Time Will Tell (the bold tracks are two of my all time favorites). Shewwww. That's a greatest hits album for some people.
The "Tuff Gong" side of Bob and his life in Trenchtown is pretty crazy. He was such a deep, multifaceted human being. No telling what he could have accomplished if he'd been able to live a long life.

Love Don Carlos! Don Carlos and Gold made some incredible albums together. Not as familiar with Mikey Dread, but I know I should be. Added him to the list.

An impossible thing to do: rank Bob's albums from best to worst. They're all so frakking good!!!
But "Kaya" is definitely up there (hey, thats where my daughter got her name!).
To me, "She's Gone" is a definite highlight. I wonder how true the lyrics are, seeing as while Bob was all over the place while married to Rita, Rita herself dipped elsewhere and actually had a daughter who wasnt Bob's around this time.
My woman is gone (the woman is gone) My woman is gone (the woman is gone) She had left me a note hanging on my door She said she couldnt take it, she couldnt take anymore The pressure around me...she just couldnt see She felt like a prisoner who needs to be free Fools have tried, yeah, wise men have failed Oh listen to me honey, life could never be another jail Still we know now you'll never see smoke without fire And everyone you see has a heart desire
She's Gone...she's gone...she's gone...she's gone, yeah Oh mockingbird have you ever heard Words that I never heard
She made it thru the exit, she just couldnt take it She made it thru the exit, she just couldnt fake it And oh, my children, if you see me crying...my woman is gone
If you see me, if you see me, if you see me, if you see me crying If you see me, if you see me, if you see me, if you see me crying
She's Gone...Oh mockingbird have you ever heard Words that I never heard She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

Yes, it's weird how so few have kept up the roots tradition while roots remains far more popular internationally than dancehall. Truthfully I think much of it is down to not having those great studio/live musicians and creative producers who aren't overly reliant on technology.Unfortunately the 80s weren't kind to the roots gang!
I think Buju Banton tried to make the transtition after his little "problem" wrt his anti gay stuff, but I'm not sure it ever really took off. Dancehall is popular internationally, but I think it has nothing like the following that roots does. Mutaburuka probably gets more play " a foreign" than in JA...same w/ Jimmy Cliff.
The Jamaican music scene/club is one that I don't fully understand and never will, but I enjoy the output.
BTW, you might like Kiddus I if political and uber roots is your thang!
