Bob Marley

I could have just missed it, but the whole time i have been on the org i have not seen a thread about Mr.Marley. Then again could have just missed it wink

But i have been listening to a lot of his albums... the man, the political thing's he talk'd about. Are still very relevant today it's almost chilling.

Soul Rebel is an incredible album, Soul Almighty, No Sympothy & 400 years are some great song's i have going on heavy rotation.

Uprising is another one of my favorite Marley albums, Coming from the cold, real situation, Redemption Song, Zion Train all just so good and pure poetry wink

Although, yes i get it the man smoked pot more then half the artist's i listen to have or do lol

But some people, think of him as ''stoner'' music. I hate that label, Bob was a political poet and he should be remembered for that. Not for smoking pot, Bob Dylan is my favorite artist's he smoked pot so what? lol, that's there personal life not there music

I saw him being mentioned here sometimes, but yes he is not featured here a lot.

He is a such an icon in the Caribbean who still means a lot to the people there. You can feel his vibes there.

My favourite song by him is this one:

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Y'know I hate that label too, but as always people laugh at what they don't understand. I got hip to Marley's music at a young age, and the one thing that stuck with me was in those live clips, everytime he closed his eyes and his 'locs started movin, it meant that it was about to get spiritual in the joint. lol Before and after Bob, herb was always meant 4 the spirit and creation. Shit, if I cold burn one and feel like he and Peter Tosh did well then excuse me while I light my spliff.... blunt

I love the part where he sings...

a tip from a gypsy
she said "man you gettin tipsy"
hiding from reality
in your world of hypocrisy

When he repeats the last line like its a mantra, I get chills down my spine. It sounded like an omen.

Always fascinated by coded driven songs, and this one is full of them. I'd love to know the circumstances around this song and how it came about.

Bob Marley smoked pot because that was part of his Rastafarian faith. I've sat around in a circle smoking herb from a chalice with Rastafari who chant "I and I", touching a hand to their chest, then forehead, before taking a hit. That's just a very small part of what I wish more people understood about the man. My nephew is going through a SERIOUS Bob Marley phase right now (at 15 years of age rolleyes ) because he thinks it's cool that Bob smoked so much. We've been sitting down going over lyrics a couple times a month so he can start to get a better understanding of what they actually mean. I think he was a little disappointed when I broke down that "most high" had nothing to do with smoking. lol

From Wiki, just for giggles...

I and I is a complex term, referring to the oneness of Jah (God) and every human. Rastafari scholar E. E. Cashmore: "I and I is an expression to totalize the concept of oneness, the oneness of two persons. So God is within all of us and we're one people in fact. The bond of Ras Tafari is the bond of God, of man. But man itself needs a head and the head of man is His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I (always pronounced as the letter 'I,' never as the number one or 'the first') of Ethiopia." The term is often used in place of "you and I" or "we" among Rastafari, implying that both persons are united under the love of Jah.

If I had lived through Dylan's music affecting social change, or even intimately lived his music with a group of friends like I did Marley's, I would probably feel the same. But I only knew Dylan long, LONG after the fact (even though my Mom's has original pressings of his first 10 or 12 albums) when his music didn't hold as much weight (for me, anyway).

Seminal moment this. These guys look every inch the young guns come to take the town. To be sure, the town never had a chance. Its astonishing how beautiful their music was, the kind that wouldnt be pigeonholed. I cant even call this reggae, much less stoner music. Its simply the best music

I'm glad to see The Honorable gettin' some love up in here. LOL...I usually don't even try to discuss reggae/dancehall/soca/Caribbean music/ etc on sites that aren't dedicated to the topic cuz so few seem to be interested. It seems maybe now Nesta's starting to gain some Yankee fans? lol cool

As for Punky Reggae Party, I like the super long mix done by Lee "Scratch" Perry. It's nearly 10 mins long. Nesta and The Upsetter has a seriously serious assicoation over the years. biggrin cool lol
