There's something about this pic which draws me in. When given the chance to attend one of her gig, I wish I had gone.

Nice to see Huffington Post giving her the attention and credit she deserves. She's featured in the top headline of the site and the article heading is, "R&B Legend Dies". sad

I agree! Plus Teena was able to hit Minnie/Niecy/Patti-type notes in her register. I think she really broke barriers with her music. How many white artists have been embraced by black audiences as much as Teena has over the years. And she was on a major career resurgence after laying low for a number of years.

Hey Smokeverbs! wave Long time no see.

I wish it were under better circumstances like a Detroit Tribute to the One and Only Electrifying Mojo, while he's still here with us...but I digress. It's great to see you, man! hug

Didn't Mojo make Teena Marie and some other folks we can name...wink household names in the D? Our musical upbringing was something amazing, wasn't it? touched

That's why I get so angry at what the music industry has become because it's PURPOSELY depriving our children of what music really is all about!

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

R.I.P our Ivory Queen of Soul. I am truly heartsick right now. I discovered Teena's music @ age 10 and have been a fan since. I'm so glad I got to see her this past summer @ The Dell East - she is a true legend & icon. Her music is what I reach for when the world has knocked me down - her voice always has the power to lift my spirits and her lyrics spoke to my soul at times. I know she's definitely in a better place and that Heavenly Choir has added one more beautiful voice to its ranks. sad

She sure was. I grew up in Detroit and her music was just apart of the scenery. It was always there.

Many a candle will be lit at the steps of HITSVILLE, Im sure. She is a Motown family member always.

cry sad

I grew up listening to her music. It's sad all my favorites.

Her daughter just turned 19 years old yesterday and if that's

true that she was the one that found her, so sad.

my condolences goes out to her family.

Yesterday, I was watching Girlfriends (television sitcom) and her music was playing in the background.

and I told my son I need to go play some teena marie music.

sad --

She indeed played a pivotal role in the continued influence and legacy of Motown, which makes her death all the more sadder. Most of the Motown artists pioneered the way for us (Teena included) and all really died TOO SOON. But I guess in this life, you're not assured you'll live past age 50.

Yep and them both dying so young. I have to say Teena's death is probably all the most shocking for me because she was still touring and working on music. Hell, she was still putting out solid material during her later years. She made a gigantic comeback on the music world back in 2004 when she did the album La Dona and the bomb ever since that release was ticking off. She is definitely one of my musical heroes in the game. Producer, arranger, musician, songwritier...I mean she had the whole music world on lock because it was rare to see females back in the day doing that. Her move from Motown to Epic Records and the drama that surrounded it was just so powerful to me, as she fought for her artistic credibility and rights as an artist. WOW...she was just a marvel.

yeahthat

Lady T never got anywhere near the recognition that she deserved.

say that again!

You know her career was amazing when you think about it. Here was a girl brought up in a black neighborhood that fit in with them without even trying, then joined Motown, and spent four years in career development before fate brought her and a rising Rick James together. Then she rode the wave on her own after time to success. One of the first artists to mix the then-new genre of rap music into funk music and a deep songwriter. Plus she preservered. Least Teena got to see her daughter reach 18 before God called for her to return home. sad So in that essence Teena lived a full life.

At first they didn’t want to reveal she was white right?

Right. They were afraid it would result in a backlash.

one of her best pictures.

Funny, in this picture she looked more black or biracial than white. Her hair was so beautiful and her eyes dark.

No doubt, but in fairness, Mariah's career has got the momentum of a runaway freight train in comparison...

Bottom line, I think it's unanimous that Teena set the standard and beit posthumously, she'll get the mass recognition she so truly deserved...
