Wynton isn't as wild as Crouch, he was caught in the midst of the bullshit and the critics used him as a bait against Miles. Crouch & his posse of 'Jazz purists' verbally lynched Miles every album he released since "Bitches Brew".

I mean "Miles pimped Jazz the same way he pimped women to support his heroin habit"? Talk about strong stuff.

James Mtume is a smart man with some strong opinions.I remember in the late 80s,he went after hip-hop with a vengeance He said it's a shame that so many of these kids are selling records without even learning to play an instrument.

Mr. Crouch used to make me angry but after listening to his 40 year old diatribes against Miles Davis have become just as redundant as Wynton Marseilles's music. There's not much to say because Mr. Mute applied hammer to nail. Look, Miles Davis didn't give a rats tail about what critics thought of him, his music, dress, or persona; the man lived his whole life with his middle finger in the air.

Even so . . . .

Critics such as Mr. Crouch ( "neoclassicist" ) have tried to corner Jazz and make it into a disciplined, on par with "Classical Music". Neoclassicist such as he, see Jazz as some structural manifestation that must be studied and applied when written or played. Excuse me are they serious? Jazz music isn't a dogma . . . no music is a dogma. Jazz music has always been an idiom of musical pioneers who've pushed the previous boundaries of those who preceded them. Was post World War II Jazz immediately embraced by the "critics" and all fellow Jazz musicians, namely BeBop?

Miles Davis moved on as he said countless times because he had exhausted the possibilities of Jazz and he was bored stiff. It's that simply take it or leave it. I think it's fair to ask what influences an artist? What influences him or her to create? Mr. Crouch seems to think Mr. Davis lived his life in a vacuum. Bettie Mabry Davis was a big influence on Davis's taste in clothes and music. If Mr. Crouch can remember ( he should because the Watts riots he got him out of the projects) outside of his window just like outside of Davis's window, there was a "riot goin' on in our country". . . musically, sexually, and socially. Could it be Davis was influenced, moved to create and play what he was witnessing and feeling? In an interview 25 years ago Davis famous quote, "you can't go back to the womb" was made. The interviewer had asked him about his thoughts on music currently and he stated he liked Karen White and was digging Rap. Davis said, "Look, every generation wants something of their own, they want to create something that speaks to them. Somehow, someway people find ways to express themselves, that's why you have kids scratching records".
