Chaka Khan... best in her prime....AMAZING VOCALS....

sorry aretha is OVERRATED... and her vocals always sounded like a tired grammy singing hymns around the house while cleaning nod

Whitney gives you goosebumps, but something about chaka khans vocals is describable.

Mariah carey is like almost the equivalent to chaka in vocals, except for her vocals aren't as powerful, and she is more of a softer sound to her voice (almost like how chaka would have sounded at the age of 11) with added squeaks. lol

I guess as far as pure vocals go, I have to go with Aretha in her prime. She seemed to bring out her soul without busting her throat. Hell I think she was in her prime at the age of 14:

I would say between 1956 and around 1979 now that I think about it is when Aretha was at her real prime.

eek Wow never seen this before... Amazing

To me, its all about emoting, so in that case

Chaka Khan: 1970's to present- Her voice has changed but she can still use what she has better than most divas

for males:

Stevie Wonder: 1973 to 1995

Its just the energy, the emotion and the skill, he would surprise the heck out of you with some of his runs. After 1996 it gets kind of rough, but his skill is still there.

lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

14 years old, singing at her father's gospel service in Oakland, CA. this is the recording that garnered Jerry Wexler's attention...damn the rest, Aretha's the best, period!

as much as I love Chaka Khan's vocals, she goes off pitch a bit much as does Patti LaBelle...Gladys and Aretha stay spot on. If there were no Aretha, there would be no Chaka. Back in the day in her hometown of Chicago, Yvette Marie Stevens (a/k/a Chaka Khan) used to be called 'Little Aretha'. Just saying...

Its a cycle of influences.

All of those ladies are from the Dinah Washington school, who herself was from the Bessie Smith school.

I hear bits & pieces of Dinah in Aretha, Patti & Chaka.

Tina Turner is the one vocalist who I couldn't figure out just yet, as far as influences are concerned.

True. I definitely see Dinah in Aretha and Patti. Chaka is a mixture of Dinah, Billie and Sarah I believe.

Tina was more influenced by Ray Charles, Little Richard and Sam Cooke, she had no female influences as far as I know, which is why she always sang rough. Same with Etta James, her influences were mainly male.

Now that you've mentioned it nod I do remember her saying in her book that the blues shouters influenced her singing, but Ray & Little Richard make sense too.

Etta was a TOTAL Ruth Brown freak though, "Roll With Me Henry" could've been sung by Ruth and you wouldn't hear that much difference. She developed her style when she got into Chess though.

I forgot about Ruth. Yeah I can see Etta being influenced by Ruth in her early years. She later said Johnny Guitar Watson influenced her later vocal styling (which I can believe).

Me too. I used to think it was Whitney but I'm now leaning more towards Aretha. The clips I've been viewing of her lately helped a lot...

And as for male singers no one is gonna convince me that someone has a better voice than Sam Cooke. That was never in contention. Sam is the greatest of all time and I'll say that without hesitation.

Hell she can still kick even Patti's butt:

This was from her Nashville concert early THIS YEAR!

Yea, she's the queen. Aretha & Sam reign supreme. I'm still sorting out my top ten for each. Male and female.

I'm always pitting against Marvin, Sam and Stevie in the male department.

Sam is the clear winner for me.

Stevie is given too much praise as a singer sometimes. He isn't as pure as a vocalist as he's made out to be. Marvin & Luther are both superior.

Stevie? lol

I love Stevie but goodness people overrate him as a singer. He fully depends on emoting. Hardly any vocal techniques.

But IMO, Donny Hathaway > Stevie and Marvin.
