I usually don't get nothin from Shep Pettibone's sound. I mean when Prince had Pettibone (or any house style for that matter) remixes on his 12" I would seriously be disappointed and feel like it was a waste of an opportunity to hear one of Prince's extended jams or one of his b-sides.
So to me... the name Shep Pettibone means boring! But I guess I'm different in that club music (house, trance, it's all the same to me) never made me even tap my toes.
But it's cool to trace Vogue back to a Janet Jackson remix.
Janet has had some great songs in her career. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

What about Shep's remixes of "Pleasure Principle" and "Express Yourself"? They're definitive IMO (although I know many posters would disagree about the latter). He did make the sound of Express Yourself much more pop and fun than the album version. I do like that one. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I need to look it up... it's not what was used in the music video was it?
See for Janet Jackson's stuff I love the Jam/Lewis ideas like sampling the Sly Stone for Rhythm Nation... that stuff sounds like driving dance music to me, but the super pumped treble hihat loops and prancing pop snare that I associate with a Shep mix doesn't move for me, it just sounds like music for little girls to skip to on the sidewalk. but I might need to be educated on what all Pettibone has done. Is there a link to the remix of Pleasure Principle? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Yes, the Shep remix of Pleasure Principle is the one heard in the video. It's superior to the album version. "Get up off that grey line"

I love the Express Yourself mix too, it sounds similar to Vogue and both are great

Blackstreet ruined that song in my honest opinion. And they keep saying it was that version that became a hit... uh right. Well, it's definitely the version I prefer. The additional harmonies do wonders for the song IMO. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

The extra harmonies were a little too much IMHO.

ok, wait, the video version of PP and the album version are NOT the same? i don't think i even have control on cd to verify this
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Sure ain't. The video version is the remixed version.

U mean u don't own Control? Shame on u! But no, the video version is the Shep mix. The album version is totally different. "Get up off that grey line"

i LIVED control. i watched the ascent of my future baby mama and keep my vinyl nostagically to remind me of that. LOL. i don't miss the songs enough to cop it on cd honestly. it got THAT much spin with me. the remix, i mean rather the VIDEO mix sounds more like an AMPLIFICATION rather than a true "remix"

LOVE LOVE LOVE this Shep Escapade remix. The video is great too, as it shows a lot of clips that aren't in the main video, including guys doing Capoeira, and more of the vogueing dancers.
