5 Reasons Kanye West Is The Greatest Hip-Hop Artist Of The Decade http://www.vibe.com/content/5-reasons-kanye-west-greatest-hip-hop-artist-decade

I'll admit I'm not a fan of hip-hop and my knowledge is fairly limited but there hasn't really been much competition, has there? If Kanye is "the greatest hip-hop artist of the decade" (whatever that means) it is kind of by default.

The decade? As in 2000-2010? I'll take Eminem over Kanye.... "The Marshall Mathers LP" edges out "College Dropout", "The Eminem Show" edges out "Late Registration"..... Em's next few albums sucked but then he made a great comeback with "Recovery" which I much prefer to "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy".
"808's and Heartbreaks" was fucking horrendous and Kanye needs to realize his ass can't sing. Even with autotune, he doesn't have a nice vocal tone for singing.
Obviously Kanye takes the win over Em when it comes to production though. There is something very soul-less about Em's production. Kanye's beats have gotten progressively worse since "College Dropout" though. His best production work was that era - 2000-2002, Jigga's "Blueprint" album, etc. I love the stuff he did for Scarface as well, like "In Cold Blood".

I wonder if Missy Elliott would have been a contender if she had released more music in the second half of the decade? Wasn't her last album in 2005?

Good Producer...Overrated Rapper. Keenmeister

Being the greatest in the dullest, most rhythmless genre in music history is no accomplishment. Andy is a four letter word.

The 2000's (2000-2009)
If THIS is about rhyme skills, then Eminem & Jay-Z are better candidates than Kanye.
If THIS is about music as an artform, then OutKast (Big Boi/Andre 3000) are better candidates than Kanye.
If THIS is about producing/beatmaking, then Timbaland is a better candidate that Kanye.
THE END. | |

00-03: Eminem , + Recovery (which is good but not great) 01-05: Jay Z, + THe BluePrint III, which was pretty cool
and don't forget Outkast
Kanye West: I don't like his sound, his "hits" doesn't excite me and his albums are way too long; My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy could be his best album, tight and strong...

But if this is about someone who has been able to pull off all three, then it's West....

lets see Outkast made one album from 2000 -2010, so no Eminem, no, Jay-Z no Timbaland no
Best hip-hop artist of the decade = K.West hands down
At a time when the great white hype, Em was supposed to run off with hip hop, K West shut that down, had Jay-Z running o him for production, Outkast aint done anything in the 2gs on a consistent, West has had a 5 album run not many see in any genere, and soon to be 6 album run, he is Hip Hop artist of the decade
Timbaland has not evolved into anything and is about taking HGH
Jay-Z, lol seriously LOL
K West got folks mad

Yeah in the same way R.Kelly is the king of R&B, is that K.West fault no one has stepped up and delivered?

Fair enough. But still, Kanye is NOT a better rhymer than Eninem OR Jay-Z.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Does he have 2 be? No and he is not trying to be. However Em and Jay Z have not evolved lyrically. Em's white angst is played out after one album of it, and Jay-Z lucky Tupac, Biggie is dead and he had Rick Rubin produce a track 4 him, and jaz 0 was 2 old to get shine.
And he did what Em couldn't do, he turned his angst into art and takes more risk then Jay Z and Em [Edited 12/20/10 9:46am]

@ your lack of knowledge of American music history.
CORRECTION: OutKast had release FOUR albums in the 2000's.
Now don't get it twisted. I might agree that Idlewild could be OutKast's first and only f*** up (despite that it went platinum away!). But there is no way in hell on earth that you are going to tell everyone in prince.org that any of Kanye's albums are more superior in quality than OutKast's Stankonia OR Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

Stankonia was the last Outkast album, the others are not Outkast albums. They are solo albums, and a comp album.
And No Andre 3 stancks could not do what K West has done for a decade as a solo artist, Andre 3 stacks can't even make a better rap album then Sir Lucious left foot.
Outkast had a album run as a group.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was and still is packaged as an OutKast project. Therefore, what could have been sold as two solo projects is instead sold as a double album.

"lol seriously LOL" what...
The BluePrint and The Black Album were masterpieces...
Kanye's albums (until Dark Twisted, at least) are soooooo long and so full of filler that are unlistenable from start to finish...
And Dirt Off Your Shoulder kills GoldDigga...
anyway, Kanye is NOBODY outside the US...Eminem was (is?) a global superstar...

Don't we get the feeling that Alamine is a lot younger in age than we think?!?

I don't want to participate in this (recent) crusade against young orgers (12-20 years old)
but yeah, his lack of respect for Jay Z is distressing...

Packaged as an Outkast project, but they are not Outkast albums. The last Outkast album was Stankonia.

The topic was 5 reasons K.West is hip hop artist of the decade, and based on the 5 reasons the writer made his argument on, he makes a valid point
Jay Z has had enough filler from 2000-2010 to last a lifetime, and spekaing of filler Em is the king of filler, Em is not hip hop artist of any decade, he is not even the best white hip hop artist

haaaaaaaaaaaa hahaah! he was recently LABELLED as the MOST SUCCESSFUL ARTIST of the 00s DECADE!

As I understand it, Eminem's "Recovery" just got 10 Grammy nominations. That is pretty impressive from where I'm standing. |

I'm one of the few individuals who actually liked Relapse better (clearly his best work since The Eminem Show), but Recovery is very good too; a couple of bad songs here and there, though, and two pathetic, in my opinion, samples in I'm Going Through Changes and No Love... But the rest of the album is solid, Love the Way You Lie is his new Stan...

I'll still give it to Outkast for Stankonia, Speakerboxxx/Love Below, Idlewild and Sir Lucious Left Foot. I wish they had a couple more releases in that time span, but I still find those albums more enjoyable re-listens than anything Kanye, Jay or Em (who I don't really listen to with any kind of regularity) have released.
Militant, Recovery is a really interesting album. Instead of tearing apart the world, Em looked inward and tore himself apart, piece by piece, with nothing off limits. I think it's some of the best stuff he's done lyrically, but a lot of the music is just there for him to spit over. It didn't have enough life on it's own. Something that never happens with an Outkast release.

There is no crusade against young orgers. All forms of ageism are unaccepted.
For anything, there should be a crusade against overrated recording artists!

The right skin to win Outkast last album was Stankonia, Outkast had a run in the 90's and ended with Stankonia, then as solo artist they had 1 album runs - Lovebelow, and Big Boi's Sir Lucious, a solid effort, as far as Outkast Stankonia was the last album Em takes no risk, still sounds and raps like a frog, he is still doing that rap emo rap, his production still sucks, he is worse then Ye when it comes to dissing pop stars, 10 Grammy nods, so what it's a bunch of old white folks what did you expect If EM was black no one would care, and he would be making commercial jingles EM made one great album, his side project sucked, his productions laughable, the rest he is cashing in on his skin, just like Justin timberlake and Madonna has done for decades Jay Z has been on auto pilot since Blueprint

For those who do like Kanye how about recommending me an album? I have his first album but I haven't listened to it very much, I gave it a few spins but it didn't really grab me. I don't think I'll ever like his music but I'm willing to give him another listen.
