Dinah Washington

Listening to a lot of Dinah; currently just have a few discs; she's not-as-smooth as Billie Holiday but saucier...and I'm feeling it.

Need to buy much more.

Suggestions?

I 'd start off with these . . .

'The Complete Dinah Washington On Mercury' - Dinah Washington (7 Vol. disc) music

'Dinah Washington: The Complete Roulette Dinah Washington Sessions' [Box Set]

The Swingin' Miss "D" (music arranged by Quincy Jones)

Blazing Blades, 1952

In the Land of Hi- Fi, 1956

Dinah James (Live) 1954

I Want To Be Loved, 1962

Live at Birdland, 1962

Just for starters.

Washington's career can be divided into two periods before 1959 and after 1959, the former period consisting of her singing jazz, blues, and R&B. The latter period has Washington singing more pop tunes accommpanied by strings and "Do Wah" singers in the background. I prefer the 1940's to 1959 period.

One of my favorite singers of all time!!! Get whatever U can! I personally love the song..."Baby, can U hear Me?" She's awesome! Not too many singers around these days that can evoke such emotion!

If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Thanks.

I see there's a new box set that contains the 78s from Decca and Mercury later this month called "Fabulous Miss D."

Would that be a good one also? Or one to start with?

Finally, the powers that be had the sense to release Washingtons 78's recording in sequence, starting at the begining of her career! In my opinion, this box-set would be my starting point.

Unfortunately Dinah Washington's disography has mostly been released compilations form, hence listeners have been denied the pleasure of hearing Washington's singing and sound evolve. What you could do later is purchase individual disc from her Mecury years so you want have duplicate song tiles.

Note: Prior to the Decca / Mecury recordings, Washington started her solo career recording for Apollo label, 12 songs (78's) in all. Those songs have been released on CD' titled "Mellow Mama".

I like those duets with Brook Benton.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The Swingin' Miss "D" (music arranged by Quincy Jones)

Amy Winehouse mentioned this album to Quincy when they first met and Quincy was smitten right away...

Harlepolis

If you want a good introduction to her early career. This one is a great start:

Or this one, which have the same tracklist but a better quality...

But if you don't mind spending your money for the sake of the FULL deal(which I assume its later) then I suggest you to track down all of her "Complete Mercury" series(they're 10, I believe? I don't remember).

She's def an artist worth tracking down, EXTREMELY versatile and light years ahead of her time.
