I remember he used to wear dark sunglasses a lot. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

PDogz & Soul are right. It was a fun time. You never quite knew what the jocks on the airwaves were gonna do. Far from the pablum radio churns out today.
I have ripped an un-scoped air-check (45 mins) from the #1 primetime pop station here in Portland, 1978. The jock is amazing...but what really gets me when I listen to it is what a time machine it is. All the ads (for discos, record stores....and "winner sticker" cash giveaways, etc). It's just like it's 1978 all over again.
Check the playlist tho.......all over the ROAD...just as a "snapshot" of the era...

That's Boone-Clooney-Ferrer since she is married to Gabriel Ferrer, son of actor Jose Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

That's one of the things I miss most about radio from back in the day, you were never quite sure what they were gonna play, or when. And the listening audience seemed to have a greater tolerance for different types of music. Seemed like the Disc Jockey's had more creative freedom back then too, sometimes even bringing vinyl from home to play on the air. And I used to love how some stations after midnight would have "Album Hour", where they would play both sides of an entire album by an artist - WITHOUT COMMERCIAL INTERUPTION (cue the cassette recorder, lol. We used to hold it up to the speakers, and everybody in the room had to be quiet, lol) So many artists today don't even create entire albums worth of music that you'd want to listen to from start to finish. Then, they would not only play the music, but tell you a little about it, give you a little history, TEACH you something.
They'd NEVER do that today, everything is already pre-programed.

I like all of those songs
"You Made Me Believe In Magic"....that's one I haven't heard in awhile

Definitely! I get most nostalgic and sentimental over the music of the late 70s.

It's actually a good song, not that I have any real desire to listen to it. But compared to any other sappy ballad it's good. My Legacy

It's a lot better than Jesus Take the Wheel
But you are right, I think if it was not such a huge hit (or maybe if her name was not "Boone" ) people would not hate it so much.
To me it's like I Will Always Love You. A good song, but I might hang myself if I ever hear it again. My Legacy

Without a doubt, you hit the nail on the head. So many of my favorite albums were recorded between 1976 and 1978. By 1979, culture in general seemed to be getting anxious about the 80's, lol.

I think the thing to note here is that the song is a well written tune. Like the execution or not, you can't hate on the songwriter or lyricist. Today, we don't even have solid songwriting to save us. Space for sale...

I like "You Light Up My Life". Such a beautiful song. Seriously. Miss piano and strings in the music. Debby Boone may have been a one hit wonder but she left her mark. lol

seriously, people hating this song are probably defending Girl You Know It's True on another thread My Legacy

I don't "HATE" this song, just got way tired of it, lol. But the entire "Girl You Know It's True" album is one of my all time favorites, lol. I love every song on that album, lol. I always felt that when Rob and Fab were exposed, that they should have given the Grammy to the ACTUAL people that sang on it. As I saw it, they could have continued making albums and touring. They should have let Rob and Fab stay on as the backup dancers, and brought the ACTUAL singers out front and center. I loved the music of Milli Vanilli, it was part of the soundtrack of a very special time of my life.

I agree that since they won a Grammy they should have given it to the actual singers/writers once the scandal broke. It made the Grammys look really bad IMO to second guess their own decision when they supposedly gave an award to the music.
But I am the opposite, I hated them even before they were exposed! My Legacy

come out the closet into the Boone shine, you know you like this song.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I didn't like NONE of the tracks. Oddly around that time I watched their videos, and I was only five, I was like "those guys are not even singing." Then nearly a year later...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ahh, there it is right there!
The thing about it for me though was I was never really paying THAT much attention to Rob & Fab to begin with, even though they were the face of Milli Vanilli. For me, it was about that music. How could you not LOVE "I'm Gonna Miss You", or "Blame It On The Rain"? But then again, you were only 5 and I was already WELL into my 20's (...VERY well into, lol). So the songs for me were tied to the relationships and good times I was experiencing in those days.
But still... Dayum Timmy!
