I got it and love it! But there's already another thread on here about Duran Duran. No need to start a second one.

I know, I started one of them! lol. I thought the fact that the single is free needed it's own thread.

Yeah got this, early this morning, liked this song straight away from the leak, i prefer the heavier sounds/band etc....also the chorus is pure DD 80's feel, i know some are scared of the whole "80's thing and retro" there are ways to make things sound like u did but still current and not "desperate" to re-create. Over on the DD board, there are mixed reactions. Some feel it is not the "Rio" sound as promised. I admit the verse may be loud for some, but the chorus is classic DD.
We have to realize that it's 30 years later and these guys are still putting music out. That has to count for something!

yeah i spent the last year trying to explain that to people about a-ha and the latest and last album, this and that, but sometimes people just hold to one album and think that artists always stay as 20 year olds and never grow up "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I really like it! I was scared it was going to be too 80's and retro for me. But I think they did a good job of still sounding like themselves with their signature sound in the same genre of music, but updating it a little and making it modern.
Here are clips from the whole album. Everything sounds great to me!

Uh, whatever.
Kelis and Ana from Scissor Sisters are the guest vocalists on the album. [Edited 12/10/10 18:05pm]

Yeah i mean im getting it whether or not i dig a single or not, thats what is called loyality and how you build a following, everyone is always going to differ on likes and dislikes of their artists work "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

So true. It's going on 2011, we don't need a duplicate of one of their albums from the 80's. [Edited 12/11/10 10:24am]

True. I think with older artists that I've liked over the years, even if I don't like the first single, I will tend to check out the whole album because I figure there will be at least a couple of songs on there I do enjoy because I've liked the majority of an artists' work over the years.

The album leaked, there are some songs I found on youtube. They sound really good!
They should move the album date up a week like they did with the single.

Me too. | |

yeah its already up on a few download sites, with no label involved i cant understand how it got out this quick, but i dont think it will hurt much because the loyal following will get the iTunes and physical version pretty much "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I wonder how not having a label will affect them. I love the record, but I wouldn't know about it unless I went to the DD forums. It doesn't see there's been much press on it. Maybe it's coming later. But a lot of artists that go without a label have problems getting press and promotion. It sounds good to be on your own as far as artistic independence, but a lot of times it seems like you can't get promoted or people's attention as far as the mass media. I hope the word does get out because it's a great album.

Well its tough, but to be honest, who is going to buy the new Duran Duran record....the fans that have always been there, its not like you will pick up new fans, that rarely rarely happens this far into a career. I think their focus needs to be on touring, i think right now, DD is in a stage where it might go with a label at some point or may do it on their own, my guess is they are going to latch on with a label in time for the physical release of this album next year. Also i say that DD needs to be building their worldwide appeal and not be so concerned with America, especially now. DD needs to start maintaining momentum, thats always been an issue with them, and it was even brought up in the BTM special "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

The album is strong, strong enough that i would say DONT tamper with it when it comes out next year, i know the plan is to add songs to it, i wouldnt, i would maybe have a dvd package or maybe just a seperate bonus cd not under the album, the more you lengthen it the more you will lose it. 9 tracks about 37-38 minutes thats the way its done
And props to Mark Ronson for making it sound like DD not making it sound retro and wrong, and also not making it sound like it was HIS project, that was my issue with Tim's production, everything Tim does/did sounds like him, as a producer YOU bring out the artist, not slap your sounds on to the artist.
But song for song i would say its the strongest album they have done in a really really long time. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I listened to "Girl Panic", "Being Followed" and "The Man Who Stole A Leopard" and I agree it's their best work in many years. Kelis is the female voice on Leopard. [Edited 12/11/10 16:10pm]

Leopard is freaking awesome as are the others, but thats a real standout, its quirky "Chauffeur-istic" feel if thats even a word is excellent, this is a great formula that the band and ronson used on this album! Excellent hooks-choruses but also good instrumentation in the mixes, and Simon sounds better than ever, i get alot of different vibes on this record, im hearing 1st and 2nd album feel most of all i have i had to narrow it down, also quirky things from the meddazaland even big thing days. I feel like I'm 15 again, these songs are so f*cking classic sounding!
"Girl Panic" is like the sister of "Girls On Film". From what Nick Rhodes said, they are making videos for every song on the album! Very Eurythmics of them.

U see that would work too, and i would package that with the offiical cd release rather than add to the album, i always worry when artists come out with 14tracks on a record, focus gets lost, and so does attention of the listener. So i would go with a cd/dvd pack, cause u know all the DD fans would buy it without caring that they already have the iTunes download "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

"Mediterranea" is one of the songs to be added to the physical. I agree, the more songs the more likely there is filler.

I agree with this sentiment in theory, but not in practice. Since physical CD singles have died a sad, untimely death, I'd rather have bloated albums and special editions than not having the erstwhile b-sides on a disc. As I've said numerous times, the iTunes bonus track from their last album is far and away my favorite. It sucks that it's so hard to get it on a CD. the only thing is that these things can be put out seperately i still feel an album loses something when its jacked up to 15 tracks, with 4-5 songs that wouldnt have been on a record but now are. Lead singer of a-ha pointed this out about the "Lifelines" album, he said it was too long, 15 tracks were tossed in and at least 4-5 were not good enough to be on a record, most of them were because there really werent bsides and things like that anymore. As he said there were great songs trapped on a bloated album. Its an interesting issue, but i have to agree that ALOT of albums pushed to the limit are not as good as shorter records. If these "other" songs are good enough to be out, then have another record ready to come out within the year. Back in the 80's, many artists had 8 to 10 tracks on an album.
These days you get 16 sometimes. Depending on who the artist is, in most cases I will play maybe 5 or 6 cuts mostly and rarely play the others.
I play all tracks at least once or twice, but may not upload them all if they are bland.
