Ne-Yo Laments Flat Album Sales

Ne-Yo is "disturbed" by sales of his new album Libra Scale, which entered the charts at #8 with just over 117k copies sold.

The singer feels his latest album leaking online has affected potential sales since its release on October 27, and has defended telling all file sharers to "die slow".

He told CW50detroit.com: "I was a little disturbed by my first week numbers, but a lot of things went into that first week number.

"The album getting leaked a month in advance definitely had something to do with it. That was another situation where I jumped on my soapbox and let the world know how I felt about that.

"You know it's the world we live in today, it's the game. I'm not gonna let the ignorance of some stop me from doing what I feel like I was put on this earth to do."

Ne-Yo took to Twitter to vent his anger at the album's leaks and wrote a series of open messages to those who had illegally obtained his work.

In one particularly angry post he wrote: "ALL HACKERS DIE SLOW!! It's stealing plain and simple! There's places where they cut people's hands off for less! Y'all SUCK!!!!! (sic)"

Ne-Yo later apologized for the upset nature of his messages, and has also clarified his position on illegal downloading.

He said: "I just feel like people don't have patience anymore. Where's the class and integrity that came with music back in the day? You listen to it before it's supposed to be listened to and then you don't like it but you didn't even give it a chance to get done.

"That's like eating a meal before its finished cooking; of course you're not gonna like it!"

I've never heard any of his songs, but if he's so worried about hackers, record your album the old fashioned way on tape reels and not computer. With analogue recording, there's nothing to hack, unless someone in the studio copies it and leaks it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

My sentiments exactly! All of the songs sound like demos. Not to mention, the album should have dropped MONTHS before the actual release. I remember going into record stores when "Beauitful Monster" was still getting airplay and people were looking for it. That was back in late Spring. Hell, it's December and this crap is just coming out!

"Champaign Life" is an ok track, but goes NO WHERE! Same for "One In A Million". Oh well, to quote Jay-Z..."on to the next".

That would require him to actually play an instrument, though. LOL!

I remember when Thriller came out--yeah, I'm dating myself--suddenly it was the adjective to use. Everything was a 'thrill' or a 'thriller' when that word hadn't been really used (outside of the film industry) for years! lol

That could solve some "leak" problems, but the leak that usually shows up only a month or week before the release date is someone ripping ONE CD copy from the manufacturer's plant, or shipments to the distributor.

I still like that idea though. smile

I always figured if you release a good album or have a loyal fan base, an album will sell whether it was leaked or not. shrug

So true. His last 2 albums leaked and he still sold well.

I'm in agreement. If an artist has a robust fan base and its passionate about your material, there's no need to have any anxiety or frustration over first-week sales.
