'Thank God It's Friday'---the 1978 movie and the kickass soundtrack album Well, you knew it was coming.Y'all knew that, eventually,I would start a thread about 'Thank God It's Friday'.It seems that we've discussed everything else from the 70s,so why not this film?
'Thank God It's Friday' is an enjoyable, funny Disco comedy that came out in May 1978.Unlike the previous year's 'Saturday Night Fever' blockbuster,'TGIF' is a more lighthearted look at the Disco scene, and there are genuinely funny moments in the movie. It all takes place on a Friday night at a Holywood Disco called The Zoo.There are numerous characters and they all have their own story.Donna Summer and The Commodores guest star in this film. A few of the stars in this film later went on to bigger and better things.Donna Summer,of course, went on to become the "Queen Of Disco" shortly after this film came out.Debra Winger went on to star in hit movies like 'Urban Cowboy'.Jeff Goldblum, who plays the owner of the Zoo,became a popular actor in the 80s and the 90s.And Terri Nunn became a member of the 80s band Berlin ("Take My Breath Away"). I don't think the movie was a major success, but the soundtrack was an absolute smash. It contained "Last Dance",the Donna Summer classic that won an Oscar for Best Song from a film. The soundtrack also contains The Commodores "Too Hot Ta Trot",Pattie Brook's percussive "After Dark" and the title track performed by Love And Kisses. There are also two underrated gems on this album...Paul JaBara's "Trapped In A Stairway" is a pop/Disco track that is simply brilliant, and D.C. LaRue's sultry "Do You Want The Real Thing" is slow and intoxicating. Who remembers this film and the kickass soundtrack? | |
