Eddie Murphy....Stellar Talent or Schlock-Meister?

Saw an ad (that kinda made me barf a little...I mean..can they MILK that Shrek shit any MORE?) for

"Donkey's Christmas Shrektacular".

Made me stop & think. Sure, he's largely wasted his comic genius since the early '80's, but what about his musical endeavors? Beyond the cultish street-cred for "Party All The Time"....what does the Org say about Eddie musically?

Does his (I must admit...in spite of my hatred for musicals) stellar work in "Dreamgirls" give him a lifetime pass for musical chops.....or is he just a hack at this point trying to cash in on easy money?

"Yeah" was great. Did Eddie even sing on it?

Maybe he should revisit standup.

Yeah....kinda hard to even BELIEVE that the same man who gave us "Delirious" & "Raw"...also pumped out "Norbit" & "The Clumps" (among other crap-taculars)

I don't know why it's hard to believe. Actors make bad movies all the time.

Hell, the same man who gave us "Raging Bull" & "Goodfellas" is about to come out with "Little Fockers"!

I think both, because he chose to make all those crap movies and he chose to not go back to standup comedy.

Guess I'd like to think integrity wins out over the need to get paid, but point taken. Seems to me he's got the talent to indulge both priorities though.

I've always thought Eddie should have gotten the Oscar for his work in 'Dreamgirls.' He did an incredible job!! I'll never think otherwise on that. As for some of the other roles he has taken lately, I haven't seen many of them. I do think he's a really good actor, though. When I think of his work in Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, Harlem Nights, Boomerang, I liked him in them all. I think he lost me somewhere between Dr. Dolittle and Dreamgirls. So personally, I think he IS a stellar talent; he's just wasted some of it.

Checked out his '89 joint too...maaaaaaan, that thang sucked the fat sack...sounded like a New Jack nightmare.

His '92 album (that everyone cracked on so hard at the time) is a gem by comparison.

When it comes to films, Eddie Murphy's first f*** up was A Vampire In Brooklyn.

In my eyes, THAT^ was the beginning of his downfall.

Eddie SHOULD have won for Dreamgirls but he released the vomit inducing Norbit during Oscar voting season and it negated all his hard work.

Bingo. Add stellar actors like Chevy Chase, Jim Carrey, who has made good and bad movies.

All good things come to an end.

The biggest mistake that Eddie did, was have kids. Once he did that, his whole midset as a comedian changed. He no longer made movies for us, he made them for his kids to see and that's part of what soured him for me. He is just NOT funny anymore.

Murphy's all right, I can't say I'm fan but I can't say I didn't like some of his work, film work. However, I've never been impressed with his stand up comdey, never.
