Corinne Bailey Rae: The Love EP, Includes Prince Cover

[img:$uid]http://i51.tinypic.com/2co4j8n.jpg[/img:$uid]

November 5, 2010

Corinne Bailey Rae has revealed why she picked certain songs to appear on her upcoming The Love EP.

The January release features several covers, including Bob Marley's 'Is This Love', Doris Day and Sly & The Family Stone's 'Que Sera Sera', Paul McCartney's 'My Love', Prince's 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' and Belly's 'Low Red Moon'.

Rae told The Idolator that the EP had a "good mixture" of song, adding: "I just thought about that song 'Is This Love' and how poignant it sounds and how it feels when it's stretched out at that tempo.

"When it's the start of a relationship and it's this questioning - 'Is this love? Is this it? Is this what it feels like?' - it's just so tentative.

"And I love the descriptions in the song, and I think it's amazing, the idea of two people against the world in poverty and the idea that love is everything that you need."

Of the Prince song, she added: "It's just really fun! I thought, I never get to do really fun, synthy, aggressive bright things."

I saw Corinne Bailey Rae live this year.. And it could of been the worse live performance I've ever seen... So dull and boring.

I Wanna Be Your Lover....Sweet jesus!

yeah i gotta agree, people talk about being flat and off-key and yet i never hear her name come up in that discussion, i knew this when she sang at the LOVE - Beatles tribute and butchered "THE END" along withe dude from Razorlight

She enunciates like a two-year-old - that's my main problem with her. If hear that "Like a Stawww" shit one more time....

I can totally understand what some of you are saying about her being boring. Whole I throughly enjoyed her first album, the latest one is completely horrible. I couldn't even get through the whole thing.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Corinne Bailey Rae Preps 'The Love' Cover EP

December 1, 2010

Grammy Award winning singer Corinne Bailey Rae will release The Love EP on January 25, 2011, via Capitol Records.

The set is a five-song collection of covers that Bailey Rae calls a “homage to some of my favorite musicians, as well as a conversation between some of my musical influences.”

The Love EP kicks off with a cover of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” which is one of Bailey Rae’s favorite songs from the legendary pop star.

“I met Prince in London at his show at the O2 Arena,” she says. “I was amazed by the gig but even more impressed by the after-show he did in a small venue where he tore it up on the guitar. I love singing rhythmical music but never seem to write anything like that so getting to do this song was a dream.”

Bailey Rae also covers Bob Marley’s classic “Is This Love.”

“Bob Marley is an incredible songwriter and this is one of my favorites,” Bailey Rae says. “I wanted to bring the tempo back to underline the poignancy of the lyric. Marley's music is so influenced by American doo-wop, so I loved that guitarist John McCallum gave it this Hendrixy/Curtis Mayfield sound, two musicians who also brought doo-wop into their own sound.”

Also included on the set is “Low Red Moon,” written by former Throwing Muses/Breeders singer Tanya Donelly for her band Belly, “My Love,” a No. 1 hit by Paul McCartney & Wings and a live version of “Que Sera, Sera” (popularized by Doris Day and Sly Stone).

Bailey Rae co-produced each track on The Love EP with Steve Brown who co- produced Bailey Rae’s latest album The Sea.

I dig Corinne, though I can totally understand some of the critiques here -- she either doesn't enunciate at all or, indeed, like a 2-year-old, and when she performs live, she sings so far behind the beat that it's like watching two separate acts share a stage.

Something about her still captivates me, though. I'm hoping she shores up her vocals over time, because I think she's got decent artistic vision.

μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ
πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.”

i saw her this year and loved the show. i thought the song placement near the end could've been better; didn't end on a high, energetic note. and she DIDN'T do Enchantment which several of us were chanting for her to do. She's in the vein of Sade to me as far as her stage presentation, you're not going to get much in terms of HER actual "performance". i like both albums and i think she was smart to mix it up a bit on the 2nd album to ensure she didn't get "type cast". songs like the Blackest Lilly and Paris Nights are kinda different for her. Are You Here is a great song. I imagine it was cathartic for her but its not depressing despite being about her deceased husband. the cover album doesn't seem interesting to me at all though. she did Que Se Ra at the show and it was bland.
