Some of my relatives do the soul food thing and it was all stinky "chitlins", pig feet, greasy cornbread, greens with bacon fat, pork & beans, ham, gravy, etc. Pig feet, cow tongue, and the like were from slavery and sharecropping era. None of it is healthy at all. I never ate any of that stuff. It looked gross. Probably what Wonder Mike was offered in Rapper's Delight. lol There's some soul food restaurants where I live and they pretty much serve the same kind of stuff.

I eat soul food regularly. Yet, I've NEVER...EVER in the 40 years I've been on this Earth...eaten a chitlin, a pig's foot, a cow's tongue, greasy cornbread, nor greens with bacon fat! Like I said earlier, the problem you are trying to address is not SOUL FOOD!

Exactly. And I won't even put chitlins in the group of "soul food". That and pig feet. lol

But chicken, collards/greens/turnips/mustard, yams, sweet potatoes, pork chop, ham, turkey, etc.

Someone probably eats at a place where there's too much sugar. Sugar gets you diabetes if anyone didn't know. lol

What you're eating is probably not real soul food then. It's probably like tofu burgers, or Taco Bell being considered Mexican food, not legit. lol Soul food includes the things I named and has its origin in the southern USA.

People think it's just table sugar. Bread, cakes, cookies, pasta, or anything else made from flour (especially bleached white flour) turns to sugar in your body. Simple carbs are no good either.

Sugar kills. Now "soul food" if someone cooks it WRONG WILL kill ya but I ain't got shit wrong with me eating it so maybe people need to check who cooks it instead of generalizing it.

I know what it is. I grew up around it. I didn't say those were the only foods that are under the soul food umbrella. But you can't leave something out and say that just because you don't eat it, then it doesn't belong.

No, I'm from the South. How is choosing to eat natural and not processed artificial food being a "nut"? I don't tell other people how and what to eat. People I know sometimes make fun of me being a vegan, it's not that big of a deal. I think this discussion is burnt out. I was just making an innocent comment about the origins of soul food, it wasn't supposed to turn into all this. lol biggrin

It's like if you wanna be serious about, there's always General Discussion and, as someone else (I think Hatrina) suggested, Politricks & Religion. lol

i love chitlins... and pig feet... but that is the craziest kind of food i will eat....

soul food maybe bad... but that artificial processed food isn't any better...

i have one great grandma still living and she is almost a (97) 100 years old... and a few years back great grand dad in his 90s just died....

my grandparents died for reasons NOT related to food.... and you can thank the flu shot for killing my grannie broken

I don't know who Nicki is and didn't comment on her. But the so-called soul food was the scraps the master gave their slaves, hence "slave food". As far as butt size is concerned, that's genetic, it has nothing to do with the food you eat.

Butt size can be altered these days through cosmetic surgery and it looks like that's what Nicki has had done.

typical soul food components include but are not limited to:

collard greens, turnip greens and mustard greens - loose leaf green veggies rich in vitamin K and excellent source of omega 3's with anti-inflammatory benefits.

Yams & Sweet Potatoes - rich in postassium, vitamins B1 and B6 nd vitamin C

Pork - a low salt, quality protein. only bad when you eat the most fatty part of the pig.

Okra - high fiber, good source of vitamin K and helps regulate blood sugar

cabbage - contains phytonutrients and helps alleviate constipation. very low calorie food meaning you will never get fat eating cabbage.

Many meats in soul food are fried particularly steak and chicken but back in the day our grandparents used lard and they had less health problems than we have today. This is possibly due to the type of lard people used back in the day; lard from the pigs kidneys is generaly a better quality. Any type of fat comes in both good and bad form. Recent generations have consumed mostly bad fat which contributes to current health problems along with alchohol consumptions and smoking.

Sorry to go on a health food rant but folk need to learn more about soul food before they go dismissing it and making it out to be the blame for many southern people, particularly black people's health problems. Over consumption of artificial ingredients are the true culprit. These days people are eating everything out of a box and/or a can.

clapping Nothing wrong with soul food,as long as you don't eat like that every day of the year.Greens are delicious (and very healthy too) and I can never resist candied yams.Yum yum!
