I 'm trying to figure out if it's one of the greatest hoaxes ever, with someone making fake albums and videos and planting them with fake fans, etc.

Wait, what are you talking about?

The Walker Brothers and Scott Walker's solo stuff are great, I'm a fan... what is your question about?

Okay so it's all real? I've never heard of them, and a friend of mine who is quite a pop connoisseur who also had never heard of Scott Walker but saw the documentary and we wondered if it was a hoax. How long have you been a fan?

At least two years or so...

I knew of the Walker Brothers but I wasn't as familiar with Scott Walker.

I think his numbered albums, particularly "3" and "4" really are awesome. They're all great. Very dramatic, beautiful, great drinking music.

His recent work is pretty different from his older work, and it's good in its way.

The Walker Brothers are bit less exciting, but they're a good-to-great 60's pop act, with that sort of Phil Spector sound. Easy to dig, particularly their hits "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", which I'm sure you've heard.

He's well known with the Brothers, only since the 90s his solo work has tended towards the dark and abstract, like headfuck Eno-esque horror film scores. The likes of Radiohead have mentioned him, and Bowie's covered Nite Flights.

Okay, so the conspiracy theory is the reason no one knew of the Scott Walker, is because he is not real, all the albums and history and wiki stuff etc etc was all created recently (and produced by David Bowie who may or may not even be singing all the songs).

This is all the most elaborate musical hoax since Spinal Tap (which though it might seem obviously silly to most people, actually fooled some talk show people back in the day as being a real band).

If we can find anything posted or published about Scott Walker before the 2000's then that woud be proof.

I've read one or two instances online where one comment says something like... "not as elaborate a hoax as Scott Walker" or "David Bowie sounds nice" in reference to a Scott Walker album.

Well, that’s pretty outlandish, though I suppose it's not outlandish by conspiracy theory standards.

Big, big Scott Walker fan here. I like The Walker Brothers well enough, and The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore is one of my very favourite songs, but it’s Walker’s early & later solo career that really gets my motor running. The numerically titled records are all excellent and really quite unique: MOR arrangements, crooner-style vocals and oddball subject matter. And his later solo records are some of the most bizarre, ugly records of the last twenty-five years. Einsturzende Neubauten meets Sinatra is probably the best high-level description you could give them.

So you've listened to him before the 2000's then? Proving the conspiracy theory wrong. I need to show someone your answer to convince them.

My first Scott Walker record was Tilt, which I bought back in '95. I'd heard of him well before that.
