I'm in the drive-thru lane on release day (if not way before):
Prince Bob Dylan Joni Mitchell
Might wait weeks/months but I'll buy regardless of the critical/popular edict:
Meshell Ndegeocello Bruce Springsteen Erykah Badu Beck The Rolling Stones (their last album was so good they've returned to the list) The Roots Radiohead Maxwell David Bowie Q-Tip Bjork Stevie Wonder
Steely Dan
U2
Sade
I have all albums from many other artists, but that was often an attribute achieved only in retrospect and with new releases I'd still exercise a bit (or a lot) of caution.
And there are some newer artists (or a few older, like D'Angelo) that I don't yet count.

Probably Chaka and Mariah are the only current artists that I would go out and buy a new project from without having to hear it first. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Prince
U2
Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails
Ben Harper
Green Day
Kings Of Leon
Tom Petty
Bruce Springsteen
I'm sure there are a few more, but those are the main ones. I don't usually buy "pop" or "rap" albums, but if I did I would have to know several songs on there first.
