Bobby Womack Reveals He Has Prostate Cancer

Womack Reveals Prostate Cancer Fight

BY CLARENCE WALDRON (JET)

As soul legend Bobby Womack was preparing to start his European tour he did what he always does before he hits the road - he went to the doctor for a routine checkup.

"It was like you take an old car in to get checked out before you go on the road", he says during a stop in the United Kingdom while touring with the British band the Gorillaz.

"I knew I was diabetic and I've learned how to work with that. But what kind of scared me was when the doctor said, 'you are showing signs of prostate cancer'."

Womack, 66, whose timeless hits include "If You Think You're Lonely Now", "Across 110th Street" and "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much", told his band and entourage after he was diagnosed with cancer: "I got a few problems but don't worry about me - when we get on the stage, I am on fire."

Damon Albarn, founder of the Gorillaz, sought out Womack to record on their smash single, "Stylo", and subsequently invited Womack on the group's Escape to Plastic Beach World tour.

Womack, whose 1985 album, Someday We'll All Be Free, is a digital release only on the Web, describes his courageous battle: "It ain't stopping me. I am on a mission. I have never given up."

Anyone know if he's still planning on following the gorillaz tour all the way down under to New Zealand? I was thinking about going to see him.

All the best to Bobby.

Saw him sing "Across The 110th Street" just solo with an acoustic guitar...the voice was still there. He should hook up with ?uestlove and James Poyser and have them do for him what they did for Al Green on Lay It Down. It would be AMAZING to hear him perform those old classics with a huge band too.

You left out Etta from earlier this year.

I think Freddy Jackson might be next cuz he was looking awful at the STA.

Come on now less not put people in the ground befo' it's their time. What is wrong with ya'll. lol

If Mr. Womack cancer was caught in the first stage, the prognosis is very good. All men should get "checked" once a year, don't trip.

Oh I got ya. Yes they tend to come in 3's. Ok I'm still saying Freddy then. I think we all were supposed to see him at the STA cuz he might not be with us much longer. If not Freddy then it will a rapper. I can't think of anyone else who is either sickly/ill or living recklessly.

I STRONGLY agree.

The last time I saw him(last year) he sang an acoustic version of "If You Don't Want My Love" and put a sore fat lump in my throat..
