Reading her autobiography gave me a good lesson, and the lesson was that if those people didn't have the talent that attracted you in the first place, you wouldn't spit on them if their asses was on fire.

It gave me a big dose of "stop giving a fuck about those people and just LISTEN" kick, which I needed. Because 3/4 of the people I really love listening to, happen to be assholes and I don't want that to get into the way of my enjoyment.

As my mother use to tell use, just because some people are especially talented and succesfully doesn't automatically mean they have exceptional character, wel all have feet of clay.

As Harle mentioned, I get the sneaky suspension half of the artist I like, I wouldn't want to invite them to dinner. The artist that I usually say I'm done, have pulled some mess before, during, or after a concert . . . with the exception of Yusuf Islam.

My mother hadn't seen Charles in concert in years, she wanted to see him. I do the tickets, limo, the dinner deal for her and a girlfriend, my Mother's Day gift. This was the mid - 80's, I'm thinking my mother having a ball. I call her up the next day and she tells me the concert was horrible. Ray Charles for 2 hours sung some Country & Western shit nobody wanted to hear. It got so bad, cat calls from the audience and people yelling out the songs they wanted to hear. Mr. Charles stopped mid-sentenced of a song and told the audience, "This is my concert, my songs and I'll play what I like, if you don't like it to bad." After that it was on, people started walking out, cussin', demanding their money back, calling Charles everything but the child of GOD. Needless to say he didn't do a Encore. I'd be damn 3 weeks later the bastard comes back to Chi-Town does a concert on the North Shore (Gold Coast) and sings ever damn R&B, Soul, Jazz classic he's every wrote or recorded. Encore 45 mintues, rave reviews by all, his ass was grass.

I'm thinking my mother is having a good time: I've put on the dog for Mother's Day, and she was miserable. I told her why didn't you walk out? She said, I would have if I hadn't gone through so much trouble. OK, that did it.

Cat Stevens supporting the call that author Salman Rushdie should be killed because he insulted Islam. Protest, boycott, letter campaign, cuss him out whatever. At least debate and make sure you've gotten and understanding of what he was writing, it was a fictional novel. Years later tried to clean it up and say he was joking. The only artist records I've ever thrown in the garbage.

This must've been Ray during his country & western music period in the '80s. I've heard many stories of Ray being an asshole to a lot of folks.

I had told Harle that my mothe'sr crazy sista "dropped" his butt after she read his BIO. Loved Ray Charles, LOVED HIM . . . had everything he ever recorded. In 1966 on a dare and under the guise she had lost a gold earing during a concert, on her hands and knees she made it to the stage and wouldn't let go of the man's leg. She threw all his stuff out.

I don't go by what's said in an interview as to whether the person is nice or mean. A lot of times the public never knows because their agents and assistants clean up their messes.

I don't like it when musicians decide not to do the hits, but if an artist is playing an arena, they should make sure they do play the hits, but in a theater, I feel an artist should have complete freedom to play what they want. And there should be some sort of advertising saying that the artist has some sort of concept album he's going to play, and don't come expecting the hits. Give the fans some sort of warning!

I think many artists have demons and complex behaviors. To a fan who put their all into that artist, it leads up to disappointment. I just accept the fact that just because someone acts mean and snotty don't mean that's that's their real behavior.
