Rock's stuff isn't even close to touching Eddie's body of work. Shrek 1, 2, 3, AND 4, anyone? lol The only real success Rock has had as the main character was in "CB4", and that ain't sayin much. The fact that Rock was a bit player in 3 of Eddie's movies speaks volumes to Eddie's success lol. Name recognition & reputation drives EVERY major act's success. Rock has stayed in his lane, because he has very little range, if any. Rock is a lot more reliable on stage than on camera, and that's the way it's always been. Not saying Eddie is the greatest actor alive, but the man is more dynamic than Rock and has more charisma.
About that biopic, who knows? He probably had a lot of doubts going in, being that he was not only his biggest influence, but also good friend of his. He might've felt, in the end, that he couldn't do it justice. I hope Marlon kills it too.
Here the problem with your argument. The movies that you mentioned are the one's that he did for kids, especially HIS kids. They are KID's movies, in which he play's an animated character. You failed to mention his movie's, that he made for adults, that BOMBED...Pluto Nash, Norbit, & that BLOCKBUSTER...."Meet Dave". They all sucked. Even though, Rock's movie's weren't big hits, at least they were watchable. Murphy, is relying soley on his rep as a comedian to get him through roles.
What's the problem? The fact that those movies were kid-oriented doesn't take anything away from their success. I don't need to mention the movies that bombed, because they did just that! But, his successes far outweigh his shortcomings, and that's ultimately what everyone will remember the most when all is said and done. I can barely name a handful of flicks that Rock has had a significant role in that were successful. Eddie's rep as a comedian is what got him ALL of his roles!
Always love Ed (not all of his movies), but he will always be one of my favorite entertainers.
People change, and not always into the people we want them to become. That's life. That slick, leather-suit wearing, sharp-tounged stand-up comedian is still in him, imo. But, he can't be that guy all the time. It gets old really fast. And to whoever said him having kids was a mistake:

Yes he is...The mere fact that Rock has starred in movies that have been more successful that the one's that Eddie has starred in,(except for "Dreamsgirls"), speaks volumes to his success. Eddie is in these movies not only for his kids, but he is HOPING that people will,(and this includes, his long time fans) still support it, simply because he is EDDIE. Rock on the otherhand, has never really played something that is out of his range. He knows that he is FIRST a standup comedian and everything else comes second; Eddie has forgotten this and with every role it gets worse. The ironic thing is, he voluntarily bowed out of the role, that would have put him back on the map....and that was the lead role in the "Richard Pryor", pic. He said that he did not want there to be a conflict with a comedian playing a comedian. Here's from news for Eddie, "Make up your MIND!!" You cannot have it both ways. I hope that Marlon Wayans....runs with it.

surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
I ain't felt this way in years...
Yes. That and Stevie's other cut "Do I" (not produced by him mind) are great pop songs i think, with "do i" having a slight middle eastern vibe on the verses.
Also like "so happy" (play this to anyone and they would never guess it was Eddie Murphy) "Till the money's gone" ,"Put your mouth on me" "I got it" "tonight" "watzupwitu" "one" "always is love" and the quite lovely ballad "don't give up on love" (i dig the orchestration on that one).
Anyone else ever noticed on the uptempo "'till the moneys gone", the shout out Eddie gives to Buster Pearson, the father of the pop group 5 Star LOL.
Since this thread is still getting blown up on My Org I want to give an honorable mention to Bowfinger, which I thought Eddie was great in. Both of the characters he played were solid, not the silly overacting he does when he plays a truckload of characters in tons of makeup and prosthetics. I thought his voice work in Mulan was good, too. Strangely, I hate Donkey in the Shrek movies. One of the single most annoying characters I've ever seen on screen. But Eddie, Mike and Cameron got PAID for each Shrek sequel (and more power to 'em). So they probably don't give a rats ass what anybody else thinks. Huge paychecks are critic proof.

I agree with you about "Bowfinger"...that really was a nice surprise from him. That's a fun movie. As for "Shrek"....cosign there, too. That's some really irritating shit.

Yeah but that movie also benefitted from Frank Oz and Steve Martin. It's one of my faves for sure. I would go as far as say that the Top 3 Murphy movies are 1) Cop II 2) Coming to America and 3) Bowfinger.
Actually, to my surprise, MEET DAVE wasn't the turkey I expected it to be when I saw it about a year ago on cable.
