Garbage? Really?! Although it's not my favorite album by Teena, it's far from garbage! If U want to hear garbage check out Nicki Minaj, or Kayne, or Katy Perry and a slew of other unmentionables! Teena has been around 30+ years, I doubt we'll be hearing about Nicki, Kanye or Katy in 2040!

If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

I love it too. It's my favorite Teena CD of her 3 most recent releases. There isn't a single cut I don't love. Is it true she's back on Cash Money??

The most recent news that I have heard is that, yes, her next CD will be on Cash Money Classics. (Her daughter may also be signed with Cash Money.)

While there may not be a Square Biz on Congo Square there are some fantastic cuts from the author of Square Biz some 27 years later - an impressive span of time to be putting out good records in my book. Ear Candy, Milk And Honey, You Baby, Congo Square, Ms. Coretta, Soldier, The Rose N' Thorn ... love them all. With a little bit of editing there could have been a Grammy on CS. [I will say that for me the CS album cover was the worst of all of her covers over the years - kinda irked me.] Teena doesn't seem to promote the newer albums in her concerts as she might have for her earlier works, leaving a little bit of reliance on an earlier era and the expectations that come along with it, for a new generation of listeners. I felt that Soldier could have been a huge and emotionally resonant anthem for those who are Serving our country in the military with just a bit of editing.

Release date: "Early in 2011" per Teena in a late Fall 2010 statement. (Was it on Twitter, or Facebook, or in an interview that she said this? I don't remember.)

I thought it was a good album. I didn't like the second single choice but

i felt it was a solid album. I think the misconception is that Teena has always

been this knock down kick ass funk artist when the truth of the matter is

80 percent of her albums have always been mostly midtempo. Even her 80's

output has been mostly midtempo with a few funk tracks on it with Starchild

and Emerald City among the few exceptions.

Its because her voice sounds so good on funk songs.

I like that album but I kinda wish that Teena (and other Old School artists) would just go totally "retro" and make music that sounds like her earlier stuff. There's no point in trying to appeal to today's record-buying audiences because very few people still buy CDs anyway lol I want jams like "Behind The Groove" and "Square Biz" as opposed to the midtempo R&B of today.

YES!!! Will they listen? I think Bootsy, Prince, and GC are the closest we have to artists that stick by their roots...

I didn't like this album from her at all. Not one song was good to me. That's why I consider it garbage. No disrespect to Teena, but I haven't liked many of her recent albums. The 2 Cash Money albums were ok to me. However, I just couldn't tolerate "Congo Square" at all.

As for the recent artists that you mentioned, I don't think all of the ones you mentioned are that bad. I think Kanye's latest album is really good. Same for Katy Perry's. Katy's is not a masterpiece by any means, but I think it's decent.

I think you "hit the nail on the head" as to why I didn't really like "Congo Square". It was not Teena to me. I know she's known for her funk and her beautiful and timeless ballads, but the songs on CS were just dull as a case knife to me.

I think you're right. Prince has his moments of "funk" now, but at least every few years, we get a slammin' funk/dance song.

I disagree. I think an artist like Teena Marie should stay contemporary. How sad would it be to be stuck in the 80's.

There's nothing wrong with updating your sound to fit in a contemporary time. She did it in the 80s when she "updated" and came up with "Lovergirl". Why can't she update and give us a good funk/dance song that is contemporary?

Asking for someone to "funk it up" doesn't mean she has to be "stuck in the '80s". And why would she wanna go "contemporary" especially if that "contemporary sound" is as boring as two nuns hosting a disco party and telling everyone to "just listen rather than shake your groove thing"? lol

Her late 1970s and early 1980s midtempo recordings > Her current shit. lol

"Here's Looking At You" and "If I Were A Bell" are perfect examples. Those songs are better than anything on her last 2 or 3 albums....and those were on her last Sony/Columbia album.

And funny thing is when you ask some folks why older artists try to go to contemporary, it's always the same excuse: "I rather they get with the Joneses than do something 'dated'". I say fuck "dated" and just DO IT, you know? Stop being a zombie to trends. It was probably cool in the '90s but it's not so nowadays. It's just not the same.

That's why I stopped buying her albums after "Starchild". It was decent and so was "Robbery" before it, but they were nothing to compare to her Motown albums. She did have some hard funk on the Motown ones.

Better to be stuck in the 1980s than stuck in the 1990s which is what today's artists are. Mainstream R&B has not changed one damned bit since the 1990s. Everything is still midtempo, adult contemporary, and shit hop just like the 1990s were.
