*On Friday, Keith Washington, the Detroit singer and radio show host, found himself in a firestorm that resulted from his conversation with an ailing Aretha Franklin being broadcast over the internet. Washington, via Interactive One, the online component of Radio One, the company that owns the Detroit radio station that he works for, is speaking out to defend himself against accusations that he violated Aretha’s privacy by putting video of his conversation with her online: Aretha Franklin has been a dear friend and colleague for over 20 years. We’ve toured together, prayed together, and laughed together. For the past six weeks, I have been hosting Kisses After Dark on Kiss 105.9 in Detroit. In addition to being heard on the radio, a big part of the job is social networking and live video streaming. When I am not talking on the air I am working the phones with listeners and friends. The live video stream is on during my entire radio show. On November 8, while on a break from the on-air broadcast, I called Aretha Franklin because it had just come to my attention she had to cancel her tour plans for the next six months due to health issues. Since Aretha’s been sick, I’ve been heartsick. Our conversation was captured on the live video stream as are others but I was not aware her end of the conversation was audible to the microphone. At no time was our conversation aired or broadcast on the radio – like many blogs and even reputable news organizations have claimed. It is regrettable that anybody would characterize this as unethical when she is a dear friend. All I can say is that I’ve been talking about Aretha to my fans for years and me sharing my feelings about her with my audience was nothing unusual for me. I love her and her family dearly. I am troubled by how the video has been received – not for myself, but for any pain it caused my friend. I would never consciously do anything to hurt her or invade Aretha Franklin’s privacy. Both Radio One and I regret any distress this has caused to Aretha Franklin, her family or the public. After watching the video below of Washington’s phone call with Aretha Franklin, who did not she was being taped, let us know what you think of his statement.
*****KEITH WASHINGTON RECORDED THIS ON NOVEMBER 8th***** This was before the surgery and just after she had gotten home on Saturday, October 31st. On or about November 5th it was announced all personal appearances were cancelled for the next six months, On November 8th, Keith Washington called her.

re: Aretha Franklin's illness
Brenda Bryant Corbett, Aretha Franklin's first cousin on her father's side, whom was raised by her Uncle "C" after her mom died (C.L.' sister), along with his mother Rachel Franklin - says,
Corbett added that it is the iconic singer's wish that details of her actual illness to be kept under wraps because she is still 'healing'. 'It's her private business, and she's just not ready to talk about it. Give her time to heal. When people ask for their privacy, respect them for that,' she said.
Cousin Brenda has spoken!
********************* The rag magazine The National Enquirer on their cover story says Miss Franklin has been told she has six to eight months to live and that the surgery removed half of her stomach to get rid of the cancerous tumors. Of note is the fact that in 2003 Aretha Franklin sued the rag magazine The Star and acheived a multi-millon dollar settlement for heir unfounded remarks. The case was filed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Franklin appeared there once on her way to Vegas for dates, and then once when she was in Mississippi for a casino concert. Yeah I read what Brenda said. I hope the Enquirer is totally wrong on that (six to eight months thing). [Edited 12/11/10 14:12pm] | |

Aretha is home from hospital, resting in 'great spirits' Susan Whitall / The Detroit News Aretha Franklin is home for the holidays. The Queen of Soul was discharged from a Detroit hospital "earlier this week," her publicist Tracey Jordan confirmed, after "highly successful" surgery. "The Queen of Soul is in great spirits and very happy to be home where she will be resting in anticipation of spending the upcoming holiday season with her family."Franklin said, in a statement: "I've been at home for almost three days now. My family and friends who brought me home are taking great care of me. I also have a private nurse who visits on a daily basis. I'm hoping to be strong enough to go out and see the upcoming Sam Cooke play at the Music Hall in downtown Detroit before January 2, as well as a performance of "Dreamgirls" at the Fox before it closes." Franklin is reported to be suffering from pancreatic cancer, although she has not disclosed the nature of her illness, nor the hospital where she was treated. In November she announced that she would be taking the next six months off, per doctor's orders.

I think this is good news! I'm going to go with what Aretha says because that's all that's my business. I hope and pray she recovers. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

Ailing Aretha Franklin has asked her fans for prayers, and one Washington, D.C., group is ready to deliver in a prominent way. Members of the Pray at the Pump Movement (PAPM) will gather Thursday for a vigil outside the White House, aiming to bolster Franklin’s fight against what the Free Press and other media have reported is pancreatic cancer.
“Aretha has done a lot of concerts at the White House during her life, so we thought it was the right place to do something to promote hope,” said PAPM director Rocky Twyman, a well-known community service leader in the D.C. area. “We wanted to do something big, and the White House is visited by a lot of people around the world.”
The two-hour public vigil will start at 1 p.m. on the north side of the White House and will include performances by local musicians.
PAPM was founded in 2008 to combat high gas prices via prayer gatherings across the United States.
“We think it really worked,” Twyman said. “We really believe in the power of prayer."
Twyman said he wants Franklin to know that fans around the world are seeking divine help for her health concerns. Neither Franklin or her spokesperson has divulged the exact nature of her illness.
“Hopefully this will give her some strength to keep on fighting,” he said.
