Best New Artist? Congratulations to Esperanza Spaulding for her Grammy nomination in 'The Best New Artist' category.
I look forward to seeing her live this month at MSG.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Wonder if she will win...? Congrats to her. I'd like to see her live to see if she is any good! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Maybe this forum should be changed to "Associated & Affiliated Artist". Space for sale...

Esperanza is NOT an associated artist. Mods, please move this to music: non-Prince. And YES, I saw her tribute performance. Before you throw that up, listen to her catalog like I have. [Edited 12/5/10 9:01am]

Did you report it to the mods (?) cause just calling it out like this doesn't give them any heads up... Space for sale...

She's not new. I guess the Grammy people just heard of her. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I don't understand how she can be new when i have an album of her's from 2008.

That's her 2nd album, her debut came out in 2006. The Grammys did this before with Shelby Lynne, who had several traditional country albums, but when she switched her style to a sort of soul pop, they nominated her as a best new artist. Technically, Jody Watley wasn't a new act either, since she was in Shalamar. It's no different than if Paul McCartney got nominated for being a new act after leaving The Beatles. Esperanza is in a genre that is ignored by the mainstream. I saw something on TV and they were making jokes like who is that, they were saying that Justin B would win because he sold a lot, etc. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Well its been that way for years, Richard Marx and Whitney Houston were sure-winners in this category in their years but both were disqualified, Richard for recording a song a year earlier that appeared on the "Nothing in Common" soundtrack, a Tom Hanks/Jackie Gleason movie that few saw, and Whitney was disqualified for the "Hold Me' duet with Teddy. Now right around that time CYndi Lauper won despite recording an album with the group Blue ANgel. The Grammies are really funny with this category, the group Expose was also disqualified, because on the original demos for the "exposure" album and its very limited first press, about 1,000 copies, there were tracks that had other "girls" singing lead not the trio that would have the hits. So this award always has a controversy, and always comes out of left fieild, i mean shit, Taste of Honey winning best new artist and Elton John losing? huh? I now, now that if an artist submits their work, that disqualifies them...that's what happened to Janelle M. So maybe this chick never submitted her debut album. That was why Lada Gaga didn't qualify, her label had submitted her for New Artist the year prior to her album blowing up. Space for sale...

the grammy's has often argued with this character its about being "known" some artists that have had a few albums were under the radar and then got nominated, Shelby Lynne would be one, but to me if you record you record, known or not too well known, thats not the deal. I mean Gwen Stefani and Paul McCartney were nominated as "new artists" does that mean the academy never heard of the "beatles" or "no doubt" (well considering the beatles only won 4 grammies, maybe they didnt hear of them) "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

She's a jazz bassist and singer. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
