I love me some Apollonia 6 but...
Nancy's is no masterpiece but Apples take is an almost laughable snoozefest.
I totally agree with you on "Stronger Than Before". [Edited 12/2/10 20:40pm]

Believe it or not I have gone all these years without hearing Mariah's version.
I wish I'd kept it that way.

I think most the remakes from Prince have been better: Chaka Khan-I Feel For You Me'lisa Morgan-Do Me, Baby Sinead O'Connor-Nothing Compares 2 U On the other hand, Tom Jones-Kiss and LaToya Jackson-Private Joy is not better. Also, I like to mention 3 Isley Brothers jams, that hasn't been mentioned, that were better than the original: Summer Breeze, Listen to the Music, and Hello, It's Me. Classics! Also one more mention, The O'Jays-Emotionally Yours (Bob Dylan). That's the s**t! Peace and be wild!

"Lovin' Is Really My Game" the 1977 Brainstorm version is FAR superior to the original early 70s Betty Wright version.

ABSOLUTELY agree!! Kind of a mediocre O'Jays song as O'Jays songs from that period go...Third World found something special in it and they brought it ALL THE WAY OUT!!

Delaney and Bonnie (which was a supergroup that had George Harrison, Leon Russell (who co-wrote it with Bonnie), Duane Allman, and Eric Clapton) first recorded it and it was called "Groupie", Rita Coolidge sang it with Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishman" supergroup (which is more or less most of the people from Delaney and Bonnie), then the Carpenters did it. All the versions are on You Tube.
Without Delaney and Bonnie we wouldn't have "Superstar" or "Layla". They changed Eric Clapton's entire style.. Before them, he was a psychedelic blues guitarist. After them he went into a more "American" and "southern" sounding direction.

Music: Serious Business
Personally, I think that people who take music, or any type of art, way too seriously, lose focus on what makes it so enjoyable for a lot of people in the first place. There's no objective way to tell who has better or 'worst' taste. It's just a matter of preference. No one's preference is far superior to someone else's. Ever.

Ok, now this thread is talking. Betty's LIVE version is quite supreme. Let me check out Brainstorm.

I always assumed that Brainstorm did it first and Betty covered it on her 'Live' album in 1978

Come to find out, you are correct and I am mistaken. I could have sworn she did an earlier non-live version...but no, looks like the Brainstorm version WAS first. The writing credit on my 12" says Tranita Womack and Belita Woods! Learn something new every day!

that Mariah Carey/Dru Hill remake of "The Beautiful Ones" is just terrible Prince should have never given permission for them to butcher it that way.

All the credit in the world to Leonard Cohen for writing such a great song, but YES!! Jeff's performance of it is a whole other world of greatness.

I love the energy and emotion of this. I'm not sure if it's better than the orignal, but I like it more.

Vaughn had no business going there in the first place.
I haven't heard Robert Plant's version, and have little wish to, but Bryan Ferry's take is pleasant enough, though without one iota of the poise, and emotional pull of the original.
