Marvin Gaye would have to get my vote. But it's definitely not the genre of music I'm most familiar with. I only know the really big, obvious names.

I'm quite shocked that Usher is mentioned and not R. Kelly(maybe I didn't see it). R. Kelly was one of the pioneers of the New Jack Swing movement and dominated the 90s and early 2000s. Not only is he a great musicians but he has written and produced for artists in all genres.

Yeah, I think R. Kelly should make the list, he has a solid body of work over the last ~20 years. But I also want to give at least an honorable mention to Brian McKnight. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

Also, lets not forget:
The DelFonics, The Dramatics, The Manhattans, The Whispers, The Drifters and The Chi-Lites. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

Oh my, finally my top 100 list, very hard to make.

Emotions The Marvalettes William Bell Willie Hutch Syreeta Tyrone Davis Tower of Power The Time Peabo Bryson Stephanie Mills Shalamar / Howard Hewitt / Jody Watley Mary J Blige
Then here are some artist I'm not so sure about. Do they belong on an R&B list? Some were doin music before R&B was here, others were doin Blues and Jazz but they charted on the R&B charts cause they were black artist.
The Ink Spots Louis Jordan Little Walter Nina Simon George Benson George Duke Terence Trent D'arby
Now, here is the top 100 (105 really)

26. Etta James 63. Chaka Khan / Rufus 64. Staple Singers 65. The Dells 71. Patti LaBelle / The Blue Belles / LaBelle
79. Guy 83. Dramatics 85. DeBarge 86. Brothers Johnson 102. Moments [Edited 12/23/10 22:37pm] PRINCE: Always and Forever

When it comes to traditional R&B i go for Van Morrison and Otis Reddding.
Current R&B has nothing to do with traditional R&B: its about plastic pop, soulless music.
