nod If they wanted a lousy Prince video to add to this list, they could have chosen one of his other videos, but "Batdance" is a classic.

Eh. One person's opinion, even though I agree with half the choices, like "Rock Me Tonight" and "Separate Ways". Those are videos I'd love to see the outtakes of.

Now the veteran rock bands like Genesis, Journey, and Pat Benatar have talked about making these, and they cringe now at what they thought at the time was cool.

Other than a few exceptions, music videos have become an irrelevant way to promote music. Live appearances on award shows and late night TV are how people see performers. Festival concerts are where people are most likely to be able to hear new music. Prince did Coachella to reach out to a new audience that had different tastes in music, and prob. just for his own reason to see and hear what else was going on at the shows.

Music video has to be "buzzworthy" enough for someone to search out a video, and it's usually via You Tube.

It always bothered me how much money went into a video, yet an outlet like MTV was able to get away with not paying out royalties. That's a big reason why you look at early videos.. most of them had a limited budget to work with.

I think in the 80s, music video was a force to be reckoned with, in the 90s, most music videos were made by up and coming directors, most of which we now go to their movies to see, but most people nowadays are getting their music long before they ever see the video.

I think Beyonce said she made the "Bday" videos all at once.. I don't think lack of on screen chemistry means it's a bad video. And why bother having 2 other dancers... isn't that a slight to Kelly and Michelle?

The whole reason why music videos were created in the first place was because artists like The Beatles retired from touring, and felt it was convenient to just give Ed Sullivan something to air so they didn't have to lug their equipment thousands of miles, not to mention they had started experimenting with instruments that at the time were difficult to replicate, without it costing an arm and a leg. Then, countries like Australia were logistic nightmares for British and Americans to to, the flying there and back would've put them at a loss for the 3 or 4 cities they would've played. And that's why music videos were made in the 60s and 70s, that's why Prince has promos from the first 4 albums, but it was the "Controversy" vids that they were able to show on MTV, and then of course "1999". It didn't hurt that Warners owned MTV at the time.

I thought the video did a good job of promoting the movie, even though it's a so-so song on a good album. The video is just highlighting Prince's 1 man talent and playing with images from the movie. For what it is, a promotion for the film and the album, it worked at the time. And it's not like P can include it in any "greatest hits" unless Tim Burton wrangled the rights out of WB and DC Comics. What would've been a better thing is if Prince and Danny Elfman had worked together in some way, but Elfman was still a newbie when it came to movies.

It may not rank as one of the most horrid videos of all time, but I think it's one of this artist's worst videos, as the theme of the video is totally disconnected from what is otherwise an incredibly beautiful song:

If you are going to sing about butterflies butterfly , then why have a ton of horses and no butterflies to speak of? hmmm doh! duh

oh well, all very relative...you can hardly say "You rock my world" is one of the worst videos of all time....compared to what? Thriller?

I always loved the batdance video, it's very different and really suits the song. Same goes for Partyman

"Batdance" is one of his BEST videos. lol. It would've been understandable had "Alphabet Street" been on that list though.

I think "You Rock My World" is a lousy video boxed Michael already played the well-dressed gangsta role in "Smooth Crminal" and by 2001,the whole concept of 'MJ-dancing-his-way-of-trouble' was played out. This is one of his least inspired videos.

Estranged? Bombastic and overambitious, yeah, but not bad...
