Very few acts had any artistic input at Motown. That's why many of them recorded the same songs. The ones that did either threatened to leave (Stevie Wonder), refused to record (Marvin Gaye), give away the publishing (Commodores), or was Berry's buddy (Smokey Robinson). Even Diana Ross didn't really have any say in what she recorded. Being an in-law of Berry didn't help Marvin much, and I don't think it helped Jermaine either, given that Berry refused to release the album Jermaine recorded in Philadelphia with some of the Gamble & Huff crew, lol.okay lol, well ... maybe Hazel Gordy eventually convinced Berry ? Did Jermaine already have a binding contract with Motown while still in the Jackson 5 and therefor eventually left the group ? He was later doing some A&R at Motown as well, and introduced a group like Switch to the label. | |
