Elton John from the 70s is the bomb... Check out "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" LP and "Yellow Brick Road."

I never heard this on the radio, but I used to see this video all the time. I don't know how this duet came about. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Elton John in the 70's was cool.
Now he's all about Disney showtunes. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

The song's not that bad, but the video is so over-the-top and steeped in 80's cheese. It's like cheaper versions of Boy George and Tina Turner in a Frankie Goes To Hollywood video. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

He recently put out a rock album with Leon Russell, I heard it's real good.

I liked Captain and the Kid, Songs from the West Coast, and Peachtree Road. 80s and 90s era are hit and miss, but Too Low For Zero's good.
But the self titled, Tumbleweed, Madman, Don't Shoot Me, Yellow Brick Road, Capt Fantastic, and Blue Moves are all good. Here and There's a great live album, too.

Elton wanted Tina Turner to sing this song with him,but she had scheduling conflcts so he asked Millie Jackson. It's interesting to hear the outrageous Millie Jackson in this type of setting.....singing a slick,over-synthesized mid-80s pop tune

Elton's work during the 60's and 70's is brilliant. Musically and lyrically it's amazing!!

The thing is that people give Elton the rap of nothing is better than what he did in the 70's, etc...but thats not entirely true. To me ALL artists with actual careers hit that point of being "comfortable" but also to me the 70's and 80's were so different in the production, everyone was drastically "cheesy" in comparison, and i mean EVERYONE, from stevie wonder to elton to mccartney to the fucking rolling stones, mainly because new artists were coming out with new techniques, computers were taking over and it was all new, and everyone was learning it, this that and the other. U cant compare decades for artists with catalogs, that simple.
But just as much as there is GOLD in his 70's work, he did some good albums in the 80's and even some of the not-so-good albums, they still had gems on them. I mean his 1988 album "sleeping with the past" is a fucking gem of an album, and many tracks from "reg strikes back" and the "Live in Australia" is one of the BEST live albums ever. And then flip over to 2000 and on and Elton now is on another level, i mean "songs from the west coast" is one of the best albums ever, his new record with Leon Russell is the best of the year. So i dont buy into he's a disney artist, that comment is so limiting to his work, shit the guy has 40 albums and 2 are disney albums, that SORRY you know the fucking Lion King was great for what it was intended to be, shit PRINCE did that fucking horrific song for Happy Feet.
Not only that Elton is possibly the best "piano man" and music writer of the last 50 years, to me i know that Elvis is considered the king and MJ, madonna and all that, but to NOT mention Elton John as one of the best all time, is fucking insanity. Harlepolis, hold on, calm down. I need to warn you about something. His actual full albums can be quite middling. He has written many great songs, but also some stinky crap. I need to guide you in your purchases...lol
Don't worry, it won't hurt. All you others say Hell Yea!!

OK heres an official breakdown and my view on each record, im assuming outside of the hits that you dont have any of his albums, so i will give you each and a slight word or two.
Empty Sky - 1969 People forget this is where it began, its a pretty good debut album, SkylinePigeon is one of his best songs from the early days.
Elton John- 1970 this is possibly one of the best albums of all time, this is where everyone should start if you dont own any elton, fucking brilliant and only his second album.
TumbleWeed Connection- 1970 the fact these two came out in the same year show GENIUS, in songwriting both music from elton and lyrics from Bernie Taupin, def buy for Come Down in Time alone.
Madman Across the Water- 1971 more excellent work, this album takes a bit more to get into, but again is another great piece of work from beginning to end, just for Tiny Dancer and Levon alone.
Honky Chateau- 1972 possibly his most underrated album, its not spoken of much, but to me was a perfect record, key cuts Rocket Man, Hercules, Honky Cat, Mona Lisa's Mad Hatters, Salvation and the classic "i think im goin kill myself"
Dont Shoot Me im only the piano player- 1973 pretty good record, one of the weaker of the 70's work to me, did have Daniel, Have Mercy on the Criminal, all in all still strong.
GoodBye Yellow Brick Road- 1973 obviously this one is talked about the most of the 70's work, and its all deserved, one of the best albums ever start to finish
Caribou- 1974 this is an ok record, does have Dont let the sun go down on me and Bitch is back, Stinker and Pinky also stronger cuts.
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy- 1975 another perfect album, key cuts Someone Saved My live Tonight, title cut, We all Fall in Love Sometimes is amazing!
Rock of the Westies - 1975 a decent record one of my lesser faves of Elton's catalog. Island Girl and Grow some funk on your own are standouts.
Blue Moves- 1976 this is a very dark record and you need to approach it like that, but its excellent because its a response to being on the road for half a decade, having done all these albums in under 7 years, and it was all quality shit too. Blue Moves is just that reflective record, its a purchase just for the track "TONIGHT" which is never spoken of, but one of his best songs ever.
Then things got a little strange, experimental, Bernie and Elton split for a bit, there were some Hits packages put out, live records and in 1977 Elton didnt have an album out, a first from someone who did one to two a year.
1978, 1979 to me were lost, with the albums Victim of Love and Single Man, it was just ok stuff.
21 at 33 - 1980 was an ok record, nothing great nothing horrible but just ok, the title stood for Eltons age (33) and 21 stood for albums released at that point (which counted live and hits records)
The Fox- 1981 nothing much i can say for this record, not anything strong to me for the most part one of his weakest
Jump Up - 1982 now its the return of Elton, this is why it pisses me off when people say he did NOTHING in the 80's this is a great record, tracks like Dear John, Empty Garden (for John Lennon), Blue Eyes, Ball and Chain, All Quiet on the western front, nearly a perfect record.
Too Low For Zero- 1983 very underrated as an ALBUM, strong strong singles but great album cuts too, like the title track and Cold As Christmas.
Breaking Hearts- 1984 another great album tracks like Restless, Lil Frigerator, Burning Buildings, Sad Songs, who wears these shoes, and the title track all strong.
Ice on Fire- 1985 far from bad and far from great album, best cuts Act of War with Millie Jackson, Nikita, Soul Glove and Wrap Her Up (with George Michael)
Leather Jackets - 1986 Eltons 20th album (studio) and worst, and last studio one for MCA, just a bad record overall.
Reg Strikes Back - 1988 after throat surgery Elton bounced back decently with an underrated record, featured the big hit I Dont wanna Go on With You like that, A Word In Spanish, great album tracks like Japanese Hands and GoodBye Marlon Brando
Sleeping With the Past - 1989 Amazing how Elton pulled this record off as he was going through alot of addictions, drugs, food, alcohol etc..a sick man inside still doing great music. Best tracks, Blue Avenue, Title Track, Durban Deep, Healing Hands, Amazes Me, very gospel/soul type record fit Eltons Now Deeper Voice.
The One- 1992 a pretty good record did very well, hit singles like the title track, the last song, Simple Life, all very strong .
Duets- 1993 no comment on this mess
Made in England - 1995 very good record, Elton and Bernie reflecting to where they came from, strong cuts like the title track, Believe and Blessed all hit singles, also strong was the album cut Cold and Lies.
The Big Picture- 1996 a pretty good record a little to over produced for AC radio strong cuts the title track, Something in the way looked tonight, Live Like Horses, Wicked Dreams.
During the next few years Elton did the road to El Dorado and Aida
Songs From the West Coast - 2001, fucking brillant album, straight through perfect, great song writing and music, a must own.
Peachtree Road - 2004 i like this album for its simplicity even more stripped than the last record, in your face vocals, another win! Best Cuts Weight of the World, ANswer in the Sky,All that im Allowed.
The Captain and the Kid- 2006 another great album, an excellent 3 album run for Elton, harking back to the 70's when he did 3 a year, now he just took longer between albums. This is obviously a "themed" album and Sequel to Captain Fantastic. Great Cuts, The Bridge, TinderBox, Postcards from Richard Nixon, Old 67, and Wouldnt Have it any other way (NYC).
The Union -2010 with Leon Russel his idol, and i must say, I never really looked into Leon and Because of this record i started getting the catalog, best album of the year.
Now also in this mix are alot of Best of's and Love Song collections, a few soundtracks for the stage and Disney, and Live Records.
2 of the best Live Records to me
11-17-70 from 1970 fucking raw and showed a great band Live in Australia 1987 Elton was in horrible shape, his throat needed surgery and yet he went on tour, fucking great setlist, tight orchestra NOT cheesy, amazing arrangements, and so filled with emotion in eltons voice.
All in all Elton has 31 studio records and then factor in live, hits, box sets, soundtracks, stage stuff, about 50-55 releases all together.

You forgot to mention the 1979 album 'The Complete Thom Bell Sessions'.It's actually a 6-song EP but I think it's an interesting project.Elton was in love with the R&B sounds of that era, particularly the Philly sound and he wanted to go in that direction. The songs were recorded in 1977 with producer Thom Bell, but was kept in the vault for a few years.A single was released,"Mama Can't Buy You Love",which features the Spinners on background vocals. It became a hit.

Just a quick note for Harlepolis.
I too have all of Elton's albums and mostly agree with what Last December has posted here. As a general thought, I probably wouldn't steer you towards his first few albums as a jumping off point. I love those albums, but Elton's first few records are pretty nasally, and don't have a lot of "soul" to them.
My two cents:
If you are really interested in exploring the studio albums to get the album tracks, here are my top 4 for you and why.
1 - Captain Fantastic - Like Last December said, this is a perfect record. It's Elton and Bernie's autobiography from the time they first met to the time of their record.
2 - Peachtree Road - Mind you, this is nowhere near my top ten Elton John records, but almost every song on it is a grower. Almost all of the songs have a gospel choir singing backgrounds, making this album have a spiritual feel to it. The song writing isn't the most original, but there are lot of songs on here that you can REALLY feel. I strongly believe you would grow to love this album.
3 - Sleeping With the Past - See Last December's review. Just a great record that came out of nowhere to me. Elton's drug addiction had really beaten him ragged and he emerged with this heartfelt album of very moving songs. Other than Song From the West Coast, this is my favorite album of his post 1976.
4 - Tumbleweed Connection - Alongside Captain Fantastic, this is my favorite album, and it is a melting pot of Americana sounds. There are soulful tracks, country and western tinged tunes, ballads, rocks songs. It really has a bit of everything.

I usually don't like his more rocky stuff, but this really cooks. Dee Murray is slaying that guitar.
Compare this to his layed back concerts now.
