The album is good. Not better than his second disc Late Registration, but close to it. More thought out than Graduation...less ego driven like College Droput and more experiemental than 808's And Heartbreak".
Kanye succeeds being vulnerable, honest and even sometimes hurt on Dark Twisted Fantasy. It only falls short when his ego driven rants are on blast especially on the first couple of tracks, some featured guests coupld have been left off i.e. Monster and So Appalled; which does nothing for the album itself just like his last couple of featured guests on past albums that have no type of theme at all.
Kanye's music has alot of character and charisma. He probably will have trouble having any type of smash hit on this album ..not alot of that; but in the same time that what makes it excell...its personal truth and unflentching experimentation with guitars, sounds and samples.
That's going kind of faaaaar stretch (genuis) imo. When I think Genius I think Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, hell...George Clinton, Prince, MJ on a musical note...but Kanye still has years to come to say 'genuis'..come on...
Agree with most of this (although CD is still my favorite - he can be funny as hell when he wants to be).
I also agree he's really going to have a ton a hit singles off this thing. But I am glad it's much more interesting than Graduation. A- in my book.
No I was saying that I dont actually think he will have alot of hits off of this album...it is not a commercial-like record...I think the sales off of this album will be on the extent of his artistic craftmanship and hype...plus Kanye has ALWAYS delivered a great album despite his ego nonetheless...he has always been himself no matter what; which looks good on anyones part in this fake ass industry. He put out enough hits to solidify that he can create a top charting single or 10...he almost doesnt have to do that anymore right right now.

Right now it is my favorite track.. love John Legend on the chorus and the sample used w/ the orchestra and keys ...I also cant stop playing that and Devil In A New Dress...

I like the song power..... but the rest is trash. I also thought it was recorded poorly. It sounded really distorted.
I like most of the album- but I'm glad somebody else noticed how poorly mixed it is. It's especially bad with headphones on.
Probably once the "newness" wears off, more people will start speaking on it. It's the FIRST thing I noticed about it, and it's the main thing that's prevented me from being able to get into it.

True. Jay-Z's Kingdom Come album had a horrible mix also.

It's maddening to me that more people aren't taking notice. It seems to me that perhaps some are so eager to support Kanye, that they're either overlooking it, or unable to hear it. The songs themselves seem interesting enough, but the mix and final presentation of them fall far below what I would expect of someone who claims to be such a professional.
What I've been able to hear of it (...and I have the entire thing) sounds like it was recorded and mixed on a four-track cassette recorder, via the old "ping-pong" method, in someone's basement.

It's funny that people have mentioned this CD was mixed horribly. I was listening to it at work with earphones and couldn't understand why it sounded so weird. I had to seriously adjust the settings and I haven't had to do that with any other CD.
I agree that this is one of Kanye's best. I liked the hurt, vulnerable Kanye on "808s" but there are some fine moments on this one as well. I said on the other thread that my faves were "Power" "Monster" and "All of the Lights" but I forgot about "Blame Game" and "Devil In A Blue Dress".

It was probably more important to him to hurry-up and throw something out there before he became irrelevant, than to take the time to do it right. Not saying he needed to take Dr. Dre type time, but a little more attention to detail would have gone a long way to win me over, for one.

I've been listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy for a week now and it still hasn't hit me yet. It kinda reminds me of when he released Graduation and I was a little disappointed by its execution and production, but I finally got around to appreciating it as a decent album. Late Registration and 808's & Heartbreak are still my favorites though. In fact, the emotional and vulnerable themes worked way better on 808's than the new album to me. Nothing on this album has hit me as hard as 808's, Late Registration or College Dropout. "Blame Game" is a wonder though, but that Chris Rock skit is just irritating and funny at the same time. I don't know about this album yet. Maybe it's because Kanye's new work post-808's hasn't really been on my radar anymore.
By the way, I've been listening to 808's lately...loving this album more now. These songs bump hard with the 808 drum machines and bass and I never understand the neglect this album has gotten:

It's definitely mixed weirdly, but I think it was intentional. He's such a sound perfectionist (which is pretty much reflected up through graduation), that it seems clear he was going through an almost punk-rock vibe on this and 808. The clipping is so obvious, most obviously on the "21st century schizoid man" sample (but also on his vocals for the track with Kid Cudi), that he was going for some crazy blend of punk, funk and rap. Kind of love it, honestly.

There is nothing wrong with 808's..its just unmelodic, unexperiemental and kind of unflattering in a whole. Its a very angry / sad album..which is good because it is very personal..it just is kind of monotone after a while.
There are good jams on it
Street Lights
Robocop
Paranoid are gems.

I felt it was overlooked at the time... this new album sounds to me like an extension on his 'epic' baroque instrumental styles shown on 808s. Certainly easier to compare MBDTF to 808s than Late Registration's embellishments by Jon Brion, I think.
How come no one was ready for it then, but he's perfect scores now?

Exactly! And why are so many critics and fans dogging it out more now since his newest album is out and heavily praised? I don't get where it was "uneven," "his worst release," or "full of overly pretenious love sentiments."

Yeah I'm feeling this album alot more now. It's quickly becoming my third favorite topping College Dropout and Graduation. Every track is a banger...'Ye definitely outdid himself on this release and the production is a sonic revelation. But Late Registration and 808's still take the cake.
