A Song That You Just Absolutely Can't Hate On

Name a song that's hard not to respect - even if it isn't one of your favorites.

I'll start:

Luther Vandross: "Dance With My Father" sad

Most things by Nirvana don't do anything for me, but I recognize there was something special about it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates "Dance With My Father." The idea is nice, sure, but... well, it's just a bad song. The verses are melodically uninteresting and the chorus doesn't grab me either. I still find it sad that one of Luther's worst songs ended up being his swan song.

Born to Run - Bruce

Stay With Me Baby -Bette Midler from Divine Madness

I Say A Little Prayer - Aretha

Car Wash -Rose Royce

I thought these might go either way in the great slag off.

Michael Jackson -- Heal The World

One of my very few issues I used to have about Michael as a solo artist was all of this We Are The World-type tracks that he kept putting on his albums since 1986. Man In The Mirror was one thing (I still love THAT song! wink ). But after hearing Heal The World, Earth Song, The Lost Children, etc, etc,.......then I would give an attitude of saying "Forget the world Mike. You can't save a world that doesn't want to be saved. And beside, we need you to save the dancefloor!!!".

But given the circumstances of the world in 2010, I've relived that Michael created a song like this because there isn't too many songs about helping people like there needs to be. smile

Agree, I can't stand most of Nirvana's output, but when you listen to heart shaped box or teen spirit, there is just something iconic about it, you can't deny?

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

That is one song by Michael Jackson that I've NEVER liked

and I won't even discuss my disdain for The Lost Children

Lots... but off the top of my head, Bruce Springsteen's The River must be in there. It's simply one of the most genuine, thoughtful songs ever written, I would say. One of his great attributes as a songwriter, for my money, is to take the sort of themes that could be part of social commentary (Vietnam, Reaganomics, AIDS, racist policing, etc) but write about them from the perspective of real characters living through them - what they feel, how they get bruised, what they cling to for hope, and so on. I think this song's narrative of a blue-collar guy, up against economic hardship, struggling to hold on to his masculinity in the face of it, is possibly his finest, though. Hard to write that kind of thing and not have it end up sounding trite, but he manages it beautifully. (Nice live version here.)

I don't like their version, but I like the remakes by Jose Feliciano and Minnie Riperton (which also has Jose ad libbing at the end).

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
