I notice that as well. I don't get it. the early stuff is great. including motown-philly-jacksons period. I really love it all the way through. I was born in 77' so Off The Wall ,Thriller & Bad are close to me,but I feel the flavor from behind OTW and past Dangerous.

lol

Probably in response to all the people who discount his later works? To disregard BOTH is to totally ignore his growth and evolution as an artist.

That being said, I like his work with the Jacksons, but I, personally, find that some people tend to overrate Destiny a bit. =/ Though I can see why some people may tend to be more drawn towards it (earlier work), especially some of the fans on this board. It's way more funk flavored than a lot of his later works tend to be, imo.

Otoh, I find that his later works are way better written and he's exploring way more areas than he did in a lot of his earlier works and they sound a lot richer. You can hear way more influences in his later works and it's interesting to hear how he incorporates that in his own sound. In reality I appreciate everything, because all of his work, especially the stuff he penned or even co-penned himself, is a reflection of him as an artist. I also think it's interesting that people claim that his 'creative roll' stopped at a certain point, which always happened to be around the time that they started disliking the music that was coming from him. I don't feel that there was a time when he was just like "Fuck it. Whatever I give whatever and call it a day." I mean, all artists have their peaks and lows. He's no different. I just disagree with people who claim it stopped after Thriller dropped.

I love that too I feel he evolve as a artist in his later albums. Some times I stay in the later days sometimes I'm in the early days it depends on how I feel that day lol. I think if you grew up with him you will probably be more fond of his early stuff. I'm in my early 20's and I happen to love The off the wall/ Triumph days but it doesn't really matter.

Well, I know that even though I grew up with a lot of his earlier work I tend to appreciate his later work, especially post-Thriller. As much as I love the fact that he began exploring way more avenues in Dangerous, my favorites from him will always be HIStory and Blood on the Dancefloor. Out of his earlier works with the Jacksons I still prefer Triumph.

Off the Wall, out of all of his albums, contain way too many songs that I highly dislike.

Really? I love Off The Wall , maybe it's a certain sound you prefer from him. History and Blood on the dancefloor are more edgy , I seemed to listen to Blood on the dancefloor more now.

Hold My Hand was recorded at The Palms though - a more professional studio than what I assume the Cascio's set up was.

Also anyone in a studio will tell you different mics will give you different vocal treatments. As will processing, gating etc.

We are all use to Bruce Swedien's mic arrangement and genius engineering as well, so comparisons will differ.

Again hopefully this gets resolved soon enough but I doubt it will to anyone's satisfaction.

Not a valid argument my dude.

As I said, I record professionally in multi-million dollar studios all the time. Just this past Summer, for example, I was at Metalworks in Toronto mixing for 3 days. That's the studio where Prince recorded Musicology, and you KNOW a studio is good if Prince records there, especially since he has his own studios at Paisley Park.

Now, the total cost of my home studio in my bedroom is less than $1000 dollars. I have a couple of budget mics, a simple audio interface, my PC and some instruments. I don't even have professional audio monitors at home right now. I write my songs in my home studio, do some light mixing, and then I take all the multitracks to my cousins REDONKULOUSLY expensive studio where the room itself was purpose built from scratch as a recording studio, he has a full Pro Tools rig and some of the most expensive gear money can buy. So, I take my demo's there and mix the music there properly, use the home vocals as guide vox and then re-record the vocals properly on an incredible mic that costs a few grand with an amazing preamp.

If you play a mix I did at home with the final versions back to back, the difference is clear. One sounds like a guy in his bedroom with budget equipment and one sounds like a million dollar professional mix that could be any song in the Billboard Top Ten (in terms of professionialism and engineering). But no matter what, it's always obviously the same guy. No matter how much the vocals are processed. It's still me. It's obviously me on both versions.

Michael could jump into the bottom of a well and record a vocal on a $10 tape recorder, and I bet everything I own that I could take that hypothetical tape and run the vocal through every single vocal processing plugin and effects unit in my cousins studio and you would still be able to tell it was Michael.

And of course, the flipside of that is that Jason Malachi or James Porte could walk into literally the most expensive studio in the world with the best gear, hell they could even have a 24 hour sesson with Seth Riggs entitled "How to sing like Michael Jackson" and then process the living fuck out of whatever they recorded with Bruce Swedien pulling out every trick in the book....and we would STILL be able to tell that it's NOT Michael.

I understand you are trying to be balanced here, but there's no excuses for why these vocals don't sound like Michael. There's no excuse as to why they have nothing in common with the hundreds of songs MJ recorded over the best part of 40 years. They sound different because they are coming from a different person. Period.

And they've layered in adlibs and samples from other Michael songs to obfuscate the truth and to try and trick people.

Just had to point out that part made me smile.

Now I know a lot of people feel it's not Michael and others think it is.

As I said I am trying to explore potentials and see where things pan out - and as I've always said will admit when I am wrong if it gets proven so.

Not trying to convince one way or the other - just offering a balance.

I hope it all gets resolved soon enough.

When people think of Michael's music certain songs always seem to pop up.

One song that whilst a great single never seems to get the accolades it deserves in the mix of his greatest songs is Remember The Time. Every time I hear it I just get caught up in this perfect pop r&b hook.

One of his finest and worth playing:

Love that song. Love the video. Love the his outfit. Love the choreography. Love the gold kitty litter at the end.

Though, I think it depends on the crowd. I think that song was a bigger r&b hit rather than a pop one.

Here are the proper framing for all of MJ's videos on vision.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough 1.33:1
Rock With You 1.33:1
She's Out of My Life 1.33:1
Billie Jean 1.33:1
Beat It 1.33:1
Thriller 1.33:1 tv version, Theater screenings in 84 were matted at 1.85:1. I'm unsure if Landis framed it this way. But the lighting flub in the graveyard may have meant to be matted off.
Bad 1.33:1
The Way You Make Me Feel 1.33:1
Man In the Mirror (1.33:1 for news/montage version/ Matted 1.85:1 Moonwalker version)
Dirty Diana 1.33:1
Smooth Criminal (1.33:1 tv version/ Matted 1.85:1 Moonwalker version)
Another Part of Me 1.33:1
Speed Demon 1.33:1 tv version/ Matted 1.85:1 Moonwalker version
Come Together 1.33:1 tv version/ Matted 1.85:1 Moonwalker version
Leave Me Alone 1.85:1 (because it was created using optical effects it has a fixed Aspect ratio, this is why even in Full Screen versions of Moonwalker it is letterboxed)
Liberian Girl 1.33:1
Black or White 1.33:1
Remember The Time 1.85:1
In the Closet 1.33:1
Jam 1.66:1
Heal The World 1.33:1
Give In To Me 1.33:1
Who Is It 2.35:1
Will You Be There 1.85:1 (Although someone mentioned that it appears anamorphic on the vision dvd. Strange because the video uses footage from the MTV special, which was early 90's broadcast video, which certainly wasn't anamorphic. I'm interested to see what the deal is quality wise for this video. EDIT: I have learned the letterboxing was done in the edit in 1992. By that doesn't make the video in true 16x9, in fact when blown up to 16x9 is looses so much quality it's probably not worth it.)
Gone Too Soon 1.33:1
Scream 1.33:1
Childhood 1.85:1
You Are Not Alone 1.33:1
Earth Song 1.33:1
They Don't Care About Us 1.33:1 Both versions
Stranger In Moskow 1.85:1
Blood On The Dancefloor 1.33:1 All versions
Ghosts 1.33:1 tv version/ Matted 1.85:1 theater version
You Rock My World 1.85:1
Cry 2:35:1

from MJJC

Mine arrived this morning and it's fantastic

Some of the videos are in great quality, some not so good (obviously the older videos arn't as HQ as his later one). But the packaging and the booklet are really nicely designed and put together. I'm watching on my Blu Ray player and some of them look gorgeous - RTT in particular biggrin" src="http://mjjcommunity.com/forum/images/smilies/bigsmile.gif" border="0" alt="" />

BOTDF is the remix video though, and not the album version. Seems odd doh!" src="http://mjjcommunity.com/forum/images/smilies/doh.gif" border="0" alt="" />

Shame Ghosts is the edit and not the full 30 minute version too... hopefully that is to follow on DVD (or BR ) next year!

All in all it's definately on of MJs better collections

i also received my box from Amazon in the US today.
The packaging and booklet are very nicely done, especially the cover, really neat.
I haven't compared directly with the HIStory or Dangerous DVD's, but
here are some thoughts after quickly skimming through the DVD's:

I really don't think much remastering or restoration went into these.
Most of the videos look very soft, lack of definition, while some videos have boosted colors.
Remember The Time, Jam, Will You Be There, Who Is It, Childhood, Stranger In Moscow, U Rock My World and Cry are 16x9 while the rest are 4x3.
However, I believe that Remember, Jam, WYBT are cropped to fill the 16x9 frame, not sure why they did that.
And also DVD's only have 2.0 LPCM audio, that is really unacceptable in 2010 for a major release like this.
Yes folks, this is another cash grab from Sony.
This is NOT the definitive MJ short films package we all wanted as far as actual video/audio quality goes.
I'm sure they will release it on BD in the future, we'll see what they give us then.
I'm kinda disappointed with this.
