I don't know about any public announcements, but I've never known Carl to be "in". When I lived in Los Angeles in the 80's, he was always well known within "The Community" and among "Family". "There's Nothing That The Proper Attitude Won't Render Funkable!"

Carl strikes me as one of those guys that don't have to prove to the world who he is, it's more like he just is. I think it has to do with privacy.

He was never trying to give the impression that he was anything other than who he is. I admire that in a person.
