Celia Cruz (& Johnny Pacheco) - EL BAJIO

Thanks to MickyDolenz's thread, I was inspired to share what I consider to be the best production to have come from the Celia Cruz & Johnny Pacheco collaborations.

It's an older song, and I first heard it back in '90 or '91 on a Sunday morning salsa program that I used to listen to. I recorded it on a cassette and spent many YEARS looking to buy the album/tape/CD.

When I finally got internet, one of the first things I did was to try to buy the song online, but finally was able to download it off of Bearshare (back when I had a 56K modem connection even!).

Anyway...to this day this song touches me. The whole composition...the complementing voices, the musical arrangement, it's an incredible song. Even if you're not partial to spanish music, I think that you may enjoy it.

I created this video using assorted images of Celia Cruz, Celia + Johnny, and random pics of Cuba.

Hope you like;

I like different types of Latin music, but I don't dig Tejano though.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I like most Latin music styles, (I'm not too familiar with "Tejano")...I don't like "Norteña" Mexican music (the one with the polka beat), and I can't STAND Bachata music.

barf

I'm partial to Cuban music, and early Celia is classic for me!

I don't really care for that Luis Miguel style balladeer pop either. But I can't do anything with reggaeton at all. It all sounds like the same song to me, lol. Tejano is Mexican or TexMex music and usually consists of a large band (though it sounds like 2 or 3 instruments razz) of guys dressed identically in loud suits with cowboy hats and has an accordion somewhere in the mix.

Yeah, I think that we're talking about the same stuff. It has a stupid polka beat and heavy brass section that drives me NUTS! ill

Classical mariachi-style music and Rancheras I like.

OMG the first two album covers shown I had in vinyl (they were my mom's). Wish I still had them I would send them to you. Not cause I don't like them but because I don't use vinyl, so I'd be happy to pass them on to some one who did.

If I come across any other Celia's during our packing/moving, I'll let you know. wink

I actually don't own any Celia vinyl. My dad still has some old-school Latin vinyl, but no Celia Cruz.
