A "jam" is a fast song, not a slow one. A good slow song is called a "slow jam" but just the word "jam" said by itself refers to fast ass shakin' music.

Yeah, "Jam Tonight" is a fast song but it is FAAAAR from a jam. Play it up next to something fast by Cameo or The Barkays and you'll see what I mean.....weak.....VERY weak. His fast songs are about like Shitney's....no strength or hardness whatsoever.

I get what you're saying nod Luther definitely had more "jams" than Freddie.Early in Luther's career, his albums were a perfect balance of uptempo jams and ballads. In the late 70s,he appeared on Chic's albums too,so he definitely knew how to groove. Some of his best uptempo jams....

"She's A Super Lady" (1981)

"Never Too Much" (1981)

"Sugar And Spice (I Found Me A Girl)" (1981)

"I'll Let You Slide" (1983)

"I Wanted Your Love" (1983)

"Bad Boy/Having A Party" (1982)

"For The Sweetness Of Your Love" (1982)

"She Loves Me Back" (1982)

"It's Over Now" (1985)

Of course,in the late 80s and into the 90s,his ballads and slow jams began to dominate but he had his share of uptempo jams earlier in his career.

Freddies' albums were slower, concentrating mainly on sexy slow jams.He rarely released uptempo songs as singles.

Don't forget his work with Change and the Luther band. cool

P.S. Luther all day everyday. Freddie sounds whiny.

yeahthat

I put Freddie in the same group as Keith Sweat.

I saw them both in concert. Luther had me wanting to throw my undies on stage even though I knew he was gay. The concert was sold out.

Freddie, sounded like the women's adult choir in your local church. You know the old ladies choir. All that swooning and quacking in his voice. He was the main act. Najee was the 2nd act. After Melissa Morgan and Najee's set... people left. The whole first 2 rows were practically empty during Freddie's set. Enough said.

C'mon, now, Freddie may have had some good songs but we all know he was really just the fake Luther because Luther could have sang all his songs better than him. Admit it, just admit it and move on. RIP Mr. Vandross...you are severely missed. pray

Freddie is the on-key version of LeVon "Crash Cut" Bennett. Good singer but he overdoes his vibrato too much in some songs. It's irritating. I think they did the same at his and Melba Moore's concert. I wonder if people left as soon as Melba left the stage. lol

Although I like Freddie, he CANNOT be mentioned in the same sentence as Luther Vandross.

Of course he can! For a while there, they were the two biggest rivals. Freddie has never had the mindshare that Luther enjoyed with the R&B audience, but there was a time he was every bit as successful.

I hear what you are saying, but I think the threadstarter is talking from an overall standpoint, not just the 80's where they were almost neck and neck...If it was just the 80's, then I'd agree with you, otherwise...Freddie ain't seeing Luther.

To be honest, as much as I like Freddie, he is a bit overrated.
